Help - DS waking up every hour during the night!

DS is 14 weeks old and for the past three nights has started waking every hour or so during the night! He won't be settled back down until he's been fed (I'm bf'ing him)but it seems like he just wants a comfort feed as half the time he feeds for less than 10 minutes... Any idea what's happening with him? He's never been a great sleeper but this is just horrendous, I'm struggling to cope now after 3 terrible nights

The only way I can cope with such nights is to co-sleep. Sounds like a growth spurt to me, and will pass. Nightmare, isn't it?

A complete nightmare! I keep telling myself that it'll pass but just not sure when I don't really want to co-sleep with him coz I'd tried that before but I'm such a light sleeper that I didn't really get any more sleep... though the way it is at the minute I may as well be co-sleeping as he's in the bed soooo much

i could have written this post weeglenny. My DS is 16 weeks and was sleeping through then stopped and now wakes every hour or so, and i get less than 45 mins sleep at a go. I try and settle him in his cot and then eventually cave in and take him in with me, and don't feed unless i absolutely have to, but he does seem to be getting past it and we had our first better night last night. so hang on in there, make sure you are confident he is getting enough milk during the day. For us i think it is teething related. Has he started teething?

weeglenny · 05/01/2008 15:19

Hi sophus, I don't think he's started teething yet but not entirely sure because he does dribble a fair bit! but he hasn't had a temperature or anything so don't think it's that. To be honest on Thursday night I did give him some Calpol just in case he was teething but it didn't seem to make any difference But it's encouraging that your DS is now doing better at night, fingers crossed that we'll be in your position soon
Though I wasn't sure it if was better to try to feed him as much as possible during the day, or to try to space out the feeds a bit more so that he starts to realise that he doesn't need to be fed every hour? I do cluster feed him in the evenings, but I've been trying to feed him every 2-3 hours during the morning and afternoon...

I think you're probably right to try and tank him up during the day. That will, if nothing else, build up your supply, which can't be a bad thing. I take your point about being a light sleeper, but I found that being able to latch DD on and then go straight back to sleep did make me feel more human in the morning.
