19 Month old waking up hysterical

Hi,

My 19 month old has been sleeping brilliantly, not waking and been pretty happy overall for a solid 2 months. The last week has not been great….

Out of seven nights, five of them he’s woken up between 11pm and 2am screaming hysterically. When we go in to see what’s wrong he’s then trying to clamber up to us from his cot.

Tried plenty of soothing and even sat with him in his room out of the cot, but to no avail.

The only thing that’s calmed him down is bringing him into our bed ( not sure if I’m creating a rod for my own back) where he soon nods back off.

Tried moving him back to his cot when he’s back to sleep but he wakes up and knows when he gets back to his cot and just becomes inconsolable again. It’s pretty upsetting for us to see him like that as it’s really out of character.

In the last couple of weeks, he has started to finally walk properly. Could it simply be that? Or possibly a mix of sleep regression and some separation anxiety?

I’m also worrying him coming into our bed more frequently isn’t helping.

Any thoughts or similar experiences would be great! Along with a magical cure 👍

Sorry can't help but wanted to offer solidarity as I am currently going through the exact same with my 19mo!

I wondered about separation anxiety as she's a bit more clingy on the days recently.

If he's settling in your bed then I guess that rules out things like teething pain or illness and makes it more likely he's missing you.

Do they start getting afraid of dark etc this young or is that a bit later 🤷‍♀️

I remember my son did this for a while at a similar age. It was horrible, but self resolved in a couple of weeks. It could be to do with the new skill/separation anxiety, or it could be to do with over tiredness?
