Two year old taking ages to settle to sleep

Any thoughts on just turned two year old taking an age to fall asleep at bed time? Bedtime has always been 7pm (put down around 6.45) but he is just spending ages awake rolling around, kicking/banging the side of the cot all whilst happily sucking his thumb. He isn't unhappy or crying. He has been doing this for ages (was often falling asleep about 8pm) but more recently it can be nearer 9pm! It isn't that he isn't tired. He still has one nap after lunch but his napping has always been fairly rubbish. Again normally in his cot 12.45-2.45 ish but often only sleeps for an hour (wakes grumpy as again he is tired). I don't feel he is ready to drop his nap so I'm stumped on how to help bedtime. He is non stop all day jumping around (inside/outside) and it's hard to get him to have calm time apart from reading books or a bit of tv. He is hyper still at bedtime after the bath/stories when he should be winding down.

Have you tried quiet background music? Or sea/ wave recordings like the ones they play in spas? I assume the lights are turned off? I had a gentle music a lights thing that had a hypnotising effect.

My two year old started taking ages to fall asleep after previously sleeping by 7.
I'm sorry to say we had to stop the nap. He previously napped 12 till 2.
No he doesn't nap with us and is asleep by 7/7.30.
At nursery he still does sometimes nap and limited to 30 mins. On those days he will always take ages to sleep often awake at 8.30 still.
We also use sleepy music on yoto play which helps.

Sounds like you need to re think the nap. My little girl I had about 1-2 naps per week. Every other day she has about and hour quiet time whether that's sitting in her push chair as we go for a walk, cuddling reading a book or cuddling watching the television together. After that we have a little snack and carry on playing xx

Hey there, I would really recommend background music as well- I made a playlist for this purpose because I have two power-girls who find it hard to calm down for bedtime. Maybe this can help:

good luck

Thanks so much @endofthelinefinally @Hangingtrousers @Metallicalover @Emmagreenfield I think I will give the music a go first of all in the hope of clinging on to the nap!!! Haha 🤞
