16 weeks only sleeping 2 hours

I am looking for some advice for my DN please. Her beautiful baby is now 16 weeks and since she was poorly at 2 weeks old (nothing serious, 1 night in hospital) will now only sleep for a max of 2 hours at a time overnight.

My DN is exhausted and looking for some suggestions about what might help. She plans to start baby in some food and move her in to her own room and see if that helps.

Currently little one is in their room and has white noise and is fully breast fed but nothing seems to be helping. Has anyone for any suggestions? Thank you in advance Smile

When you say two hours at a time, do you mean the baby wakes for a feed every 2 hours? Because this is very normal. Giving baby food won't make any difference.

She should look at wake windows during the day and keep an eye on how much daytime sleep the little one is getting. This affects nighttimes,

Yes the baby wakes up at least every 2 hours. She sleeps well during the day. Is there anything to I am suggest to help at night?

Waking every 2 hours for a feed is perfectly normal. Weaning early and moving to their own room won't help.
Are you bottle feeding or breastfeeding

CMAYF11 · 18/02/2022 17:16

Sorry just saw you said they were breastfed. This is so normal.

Very normal and too early to start weaning really. Sending hugs tho as it's hard! X

My son was bottle-fed and did this until about 18 months.

I'd wager that if she tries to wean now, then the baby's gut won't be ready for it which could make everything much worse!

2 hour wake ups are a killer but normal I'm afraid.

It’s completely normal (unfortunately). Starting solids won’t make a difference and might have unintended consequences. Is she able to co-sleep to avoid having to get up and out of bed every time the baby wakes?

Have a look at articles on the four month sleep regression. There’s a great one by Sarah Ockwell-Smith that explains what is going on at that age.
