4mo seems to hate pram!

LO is 4.5 month and long, and grew out of his pram bassinet recently, so we’ve graduated to the buggy style pram with it reclined flat.

He used to be really reliable going to sleep in his bassinet if I timed the wake window correctly, kept moving steadily, and pulled the sun shade down on bright days. Now in the pram? No chance. He was awake 4 hours the other day instead of his usual 2 hours. In that case he must have just fallen asleep from exhaustion.

He is happy enough in the pram for a while, or until it’s time for his nap. Then he just screams and screams until he’s picked up. I calm him down, put him back in, he screams, pick up, and repeat.

It could be being able to see more out of the pram which stimulates him and makes it hard for him to drop off. Ive got a universal sun shade to pull over the pram which is a right fiddly ballache and initial test today wasn’t promising.

Can anyone share any experiences? After two weeks of this I am dreading our daily walks when before they were a big pleasure. I’m getting so fed up of crying in the park while holding a crying baby. It’s so frustrating. I don’t want to be trapped at home forever in order to ensure he gets enough day sleep.

Oh and he seems to hate me fiddling with the buggy straps too, but they take an age to do up every time!

My DS hated lying down as he wanted to be able to see everything that was going on around him. We never had a pram or a buggy that reclined flat; I used a car seat/buggy combo so that he could sit up and only reclined him when he fell asleep.

Also, is he rolling over yet? He might just be one of those babies that needs to move around a lot.

Try a different pushchair. He might be uncomfortable We had this with our grandson, constantly squirming and shouting when his carrycot was swapped for the pushchair. Then I got an umbrella type folding pushchair (it was easier for me to get in the car) and he stopped whinging. He would fall asleep sitting up and then I'd adjust it down.

I wonder if the cold is getting to him more, now the sides of bassinet aren’t there to block the breeze?

WobbleHead · 16/02/2022 19:07

@Anoooshka he’s not rolling yet, but is trying - he’s very mobile and it a very fidgety pickle! Would yours fall asleep even being able to look at everything?

@TheIsaacs

@PerseverancePays interesting. I wonder if adding a sheepskin liner might be worth a try tomorrow to see if there’s a lump somewhere he doesn’t like…

@TheIsaacs yes could be. This was why I was hopeful with this elasticated shade thing I bought which covers the whole pram. It was VERY windy today which may have made it even harder.

We had a great cosy toes liner which zipped up and kept baby snuggly. Plus a snooze shade that you can Velcro on and pull over to block out the sun. A lot easier than a parasol thing.

WobbleHead · 16/02/2022 19:31

@TooMinty - we have a gorgeous sheepskin foot muff but he seems to hate that also - maybe because he can’t kick as much as he wants to in it? I can separate the muff from the base, so I was going to just try the base tomorrow to see if he finds that more comfortable

Mine wasn't a much of a sleeper, even when a newborn. That's just how he was. He didn't nap in the morning but used to go down for about 3 hours in the afternoon and then stay up late in the evening. He liked to look around and was interested in everything. Hated to be confined in anything and started walking/running at 9 months.

He's a teenager now, and still doesn't need a lot of sleep.

TooMinty · 16/02/2022 20:07

Oh mine liked being zipped in, although socks, shoes and gloves got thrown off immediately. A snowsuit with legs might be the answer?

confuseddotcom1234 · 16/02/2022 20:32

I have found mine always liked to be sat up and then they stopped fighting and went to sleep quicker because they weren't trying to pull themselves up of that makes sense

I can sympathise. My DS (now 10mo) did exactly this at around the same age. I spent many walks having to pick up then put down and repeat until he eventually fell asleep in my arms - at which point I’d put him in his pram very gently, cross my fingers hard and start walking fast! Normally sorted the straps and buckles once I was sure he was asleep enough. I have no particular advice, but maybe I can give you hope in that he has now grown out of that ridiculous phase. He’ll happily fall asleep in the pram, without so much as a murmur now.

Thanks for being encouraging and reassuring guys!

Have you got any kind of padding / lining in yours? We transitioned DD from the newborn bassinet about 3 months, but she was too small for the big seat in the pram. We bought the insert (can’t remember what it’s called) which is basically a wodge of foam that sits in the pram, much more comfortable for them. She used that until she was about 9 months old and then big enough to sit in the seat without that, but I still used a sheepskin liner as it was winter and softer

What pram do you have?

Restingpotato · 17/02/2022 09:04

Mine didn't really sleep in the pram so I timed walks for either after she woke up and fed, out for an hour max then back home (she had to be sitting up to look all around)
Or took her for a walk in the carrier 20ish mins before her nap was due and she would fall asleep. I spent a lot of hours walking round carrying her to get those day naps! I think she didn't fall asleep in the pram until she was over 1 and that was after she'd been up for hours and had a run around the park, she just liked to watch what was happening around her - fomo baby

WobbleHead · 17/02/2022 09:25

@Pyri A Nuna ‘triv’ pram. I’ll Google those inserts.

Success today!! Took him out 10 mins before nap time, in pram slightly sat up, with neoprene cushion taken out and a sheepskin put straight on the base mesh of the pram. Dummy popped in when slight grizzling started, and snooze shade cover pulled over when I saw his eyes begin to go. Got 33 minutes sleep!

His favourite thing is doing something just the once and never again so let’s see how tomorrow goes!

I was also ignoring him and chatting to someone while walking which I think also helps.
