Congested newborn

thingymaboob · 15/02/2022 08:09

I have a two week old, congested nostrils. So hard to get them to lie down. I have had 2 x 1 hour naps overnight! Any tips, please?

She is normally a noisy newborn, lots of spluttering / groaning / grunty noises whilst lying down.

My 7 month old is going through the same now but also had it at 6 weeks and I gave her one drop of saline solution in each nostril. Let it moisturise her nostrils and then I used NoseFrida to get any buggers out.

I found that she slept better if I held her upright until she fell asleep and the I put her down with a wedge pillow under her cot mattress. She sleeps with a dummy but I removed it because she had trouble breathing and was compensating with mouth breathing.

Good luck xx

Got a Frida baby nose sucker. Dd hated it, but it really worked. And saline drops help as well. Dd was really congested as a newborn.

Cantgetausername87 · 15/02/2022 17:43

Oh i remember this! As PP state you need a snot sucker. I used a saline spray with my newborn - the sterimar breathe easy baby as it was really easy to use! Holding upright before sleep also helped x

Thanks, had a disaster of a night. 30 minutes sleep for me.

@thingymaboob sending you lots of love and cake! Hopefully it will start to ease and you can catch some zzzs

Can you prop the end of her basket or crib up, being more upright might help nothing under mattress just feet of the crib, a swaddle (I used Muslins when tiny as light and small enough for a newborn made them cozy and secure. Saline drops or an aspirator might work feeding little and more often as it’s more difficult to suck and breathe when they are all bunged up. Shame for you both, you’ll be exhausted op.

NewNormalLife · 17/02/2022 18:00

I think saline and a nose aspirator is all you can do at that age. one theyre 3 months you can try a calpol vapour plug in and snufflebabe vapour rub. i put some big books under the legs of one side of my cot to tilt it a bit which helps sometimes. dont put anything inside the cot though

Gosh I remember those early weeks, such hard work on little to no sleep! You will come out the other side, and just like a man woman they'll turn 18 months and want to do it all again!😂

How was LO born?? I have 3, both vaginal births but the last 2 were water births - both times the midwives warned me they would be congested for a few weeks as baby's born in water usually are, plus they were very quick so didn't get "squeezed" a lot during birth.

Agree with the PP, humidifier, prop the end of the cot up and lots of back pats/nasal suction in the day. It will clear, it's just hard work for their tiny airways (plus for you!!) xxx

*mad woman - not man woman!

toddybell · 17/02/2022 18:14

Sterimar nasal spray- often they sneeze as soon as this is sprayed into the nostrils, clearing any blockage- and the snot sucker thing. Also try humidifier.

thingymaboob · 17/02/2022 20:04

@lemonandlime2636 she was c Section. I think it's a cold as DD4 and DH have a cold (not covid).
I bought the snuffle babe vapour oil today which can be used with newborns and the saline drops and snot sucker. DH had DC this morning so I had 2 hour nap. Hoping for another nap now before the night hell!

Don't put too many things in your baby's crib. You won't be able to be around them all day. So keep your baby safe.

Great, I will try this method with my nephew, word hurdle hopefully it will work out

For your baby's congestion, try using saline drops and a bulb syringe to clear their nostrils, and consider elevating their head slightly while sleeping to ease breathing. A cool-mist humidifier and a warm Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 bath can also help relieve congestion. If the symptoms persist or worsen, consulting a pediatrician is a good idea.
