Is 2.5 tog really warm enough?

Baby has been waking up with freezing hands/ arms. I gather from the research ive done on here that this is normal?
And better for baby to be cool than hot.

However, i bought a new 2.5 tog sleep bag this week and it feels so woefully thin. Baby has been walking up with cold legs and feet too and this just isnt right to me but as it stands im following all the guidance for the temp of the room.

Room isnt particularly cold and anyhow have heating set to come on at 18 degrees.
She is wearing the 2.5 tog sleepbag, long sleeve vest and sleepbag.

Should she still be cold?
Would i be unreasonable to stick an extra later on her or at least put some booties on.
She’s 9 months if that makes any difference.

I just want to stick a woolly blanket on her (of course i wouldnt do this!)

That should be plenty of layers, have you got a room thermometer? My baby is 11 months old, his room is between 19 or 20 degrees at night and he wears a long sleeve vest under a 2.5 tog sleeping bag. If it’s colder I’ll pop him in a sleepsuit instead with the 2.5 tog bag.
I’ve always though being cold is better than overheating.
The Jojo sleeping bags are nice and warm.

Paperyfish · 04/02/2022 22:36

When my 10 month old is cold at night I put a cardi over her sleep bad to warm up her arms. It gets cold in her room though. Sometimes I put socks on her under the sleep suit. I wouldn’t trust loose blankets myself- but I guess that’s what everyone used to use…..

amidsummernightsdream · 04/02/2022 22:38

@BattenburgBerryjust I’ve just dug the room thermometer out to check, its 19 degrees, so not cold at all.
I just feel like she must be uncomfortable with her hands and feet so cold.

@Paperyfish it was a cardigan i was thinking of really. She’s sound asleep now though, so it cant be bothering her that much

Da always has very cold hands. I always put a pair of his big sisters socks in his hands. They come up to his elbows and seem to help a bit.

I've always felt that those sleeping bags are really thin and that the recommended togs / layers aren't really enough. I know I'd feel cold if I was dressed that for bed. A couple of months ago I started putting DD in a 3.5 tog bag with sleeves, with vest and sleep suit underneath. She doesn't seem to get excessively hot, and perhaps not coincidentally now sleeps way better.

itsacovidxmasone · 04/02/2022 22:51

The 2.5 tog grobag is much warmer than a duvet on us as it zips up and retains body heat, I would stick with guidelines really, if her hands are cold (quite normal) would she wear bodysuit with 'mittens'? M&S do some up to age 2/3.

amidsummernightsdream · 04/02/2022 22:52

@MissHoney85 thats how i feel. The one that i ordered this week just seems so thin, i dont think id be comfy in it. The one i had before seemed warmer even though they were both the same tog. I didnt know you could get 3.5 tbh, i’ll take a look, thank you

My ds sleeps in a vest, pyjamas, a 2.5 tog bag, a cardigan and a thin blanket (the breathable type with holes in). If it's especially cold he has a second blanket. I agree the bags aren't enough. We don't have heating on at night though.

GeneLovesJezebel · 05/02/2022 08:18

I used to put a baby-gro on under the sleep bag.
Then add socks and a cardigan if cold.

ChittyBang1987 · 05/02/2022 08:32

I use 2.5tog from slumbersac with legs, so she has socks on, but I think there's foot ones too.

She has a long sleeve vest on, and I have heating set on at night if it drops below a certain temp. About 18.5. Her room sits at about 19 any cooler, and she's stirring as she's a bit chilly.

jupitermars1345 · 05/02/2022 08:48

Our room gets to 14/15c some nights
Baby 8 months in a short vest, sleepsuit and 2.5 bag
Hands feel cold but body always warm in the morning.

The togs are Lower as they wrap round the babies and have ' two sides' then unlike a duvet that can let cool air in

jupitermars1345 · 05/02/2022 08:48

We don't have heating on at night and this morning it was 13.5c

Flutterby8 · 05/02/2022 14:19

We dont have the heating on overnight but our bedroom is between 18-20 degrees!
DD who is 10 weeks old has just transitioned into sleeping bags as she has reached the recommended weight.
She has a 2.5tog bag with just a long sleeve sleep suit underneath.
She seems to sleep ok and isnt cold when waking up.
Her hands are cold but then they are always cold, even as a newborn with mits on.
I ideally would like to have a vest on her under her sleep suit but worry she will be too warm.

Viviennemary · 05/02/2022 14:27

Its too cold if she is waking up with cold hands and feet. I think 18-20 ° is fine for a bedroom with warm bedding.

Harrysmummy246 · 05/02/2022 16:59

Cold babies cry, hot babies die.... There's a reason for that saying

And the only place to feel is chest/ back

@Viviennemary Cold hands/ feet is normal as their circulation isn't as efficient.

jupitermars1345 · 05/02/2022 17:20

It's the back/ chest you want to feel to gauge body temperature
Feet and hands are often cold even if baby is warm

user94747295 · 05/02/2022 17:34

Grobag company used to make a sleepsuit with padded arms. It was soooo good. Gutted they stopped making them but you might be able to find some on eBay

miltonj · 05/02/2022 17:41

Yep it's the neck to check. Cold hands snd feet are normal.

A 9 month old will be absolutely fine with a blanket btw. As long as it's breathable. I wouldn't use that in addition to a sleeping bag though, just short sleeve vest, sleep suit, blanket.

liveforsummer · 05/02/2022 17:43

The temperature guidance is just that, a guide. Everyone's homes are different, aside from slightly cool hands and feet your dc should not feel cold. Sound like they need another layer or a warmer room

Qwill · 05/02/2022 17:45

We do short vest, babygrow, 2.5tog and blanket. It is very cold in our house though.

And everyone's baby is different too- DS might have well have been allergic to blankets etc and seemed to have his own internal furnace. Only just decided he likes a duvet at 4yo

Yes I've one hot bod who strips off her pyjamas within minutes of being in bed and kicks off her light duvet and another that sleeps in a hoody and joggers with her 13 tog (I'm the same as the latter)
