When did your child go down to 1 nap?

My DD is 11mo and she'd got into this great routine of having a 1hr30 nap in the morning then 1hr nap in the afternoon around 2.pm, but lately she hasn't been tired enough for the afternoon nap and then this has resulted to it being pushed right back until 3:30/4pm and then she sleeps for maybe 20minutes which then makes bedtime late but she's a bit grouchy and out of sorts. But I can't expect her to go completely without and only a morning nap because it's too much for her.

I know every baby is different but surely she's far too young to go down to just one nap? Or am I totally wrong? Everything I've seen kind of says 14-20 months - confused!

I thought maybe it was just a developmental thing / phase but it's been a couple of weeks now

When did your child go down to 1 nap?

Recently I cut the morning nap for my lo. She's 11 months on 1st. She has 30 to 40 mins ar 930am then goes down again at 130pm for either 1.5 or 2 hours then bedtime is about 730pn.

I had same issue with afternoon nap later and also early waking and so far seems to have helped

About that age, she started nursery at 10 months and she was having a snooze in the morning before lunch then had a nap with everyone else after, some days she was getting to lunch or even the afternoon nap without a morning one. Then lockdown happened and as she was getting up a little later that seemed to tip her into comfortably doing one nap. Definitely before 12 months but she dropped her day nap at around 2 years old, possibly earlier.

Around 10 months, she went to one nap at 11 till 11.30, then as she got older we were able to gradually stretch it to after lunch, so 12.30 till 1. She then started dropping this nap at 18 months.

Sadly the half hour naps weren’t my choice, she just hated napping. At 18 months started just getting up again and saying ‘no sleep, not bedtime’.

All babies are different, so go with what works best for you. I always found fresh air helped with stretching awake windows.

DS is 12 months and has started doing one nap consistently for the past 3 weeks.

I was the same as you, but he has been only having one nap at nursery, was fighting his second nap at home & having false starts at night (he hasn’t done that in months). He was also really battling going to sleep at night & his bedtimes were getting later and later.

His morning nap times were only 40 mins and we were fighting for about 45 mins in the afternoon for him to only sleep for 20 mins.

Now he is consistently sleeping for at least an hour (usual longer) at nursery on one nap, and for 2-2.5 hours at home/when with us. He’s stopped the false starts & bedtime is now easy - he feeds, I put him in his cot, he puts his dummy in & is asleep in 5 minutes. Plus he now does at least 3-3.5 hr stints before stirring.

My LO has gone just gone down to 1 nap now and he is 13.5 months. It was a combination of the fact that he started nursery at 12 months and they operate around a 1-nap schedule, and the fact it was getting harder and harder to fit in 2 naps. His first nap was getting later so his 2nd nap always ended up being too late and made bedtime a nightmare.

For a few weeks we alternated between 1 nap and 2, but now fully on 1.

Around their first birthday for both of mine, then dropped completely the week they turned 2.
They were consistent at least!
I think 11 months sounds pretty normal tbh

Findahouse21 · 20/01/2022 21:17

My daughter was down to 1 nap by 5 months old!! People judged but we went from fighting all sleep to her sleeping for a decent nap and overnight for some longer bits too. She's now 2 and still sleeps for 2 hours after lunch and often 13 hours overnight as well so hasn't harmed her in anyway. They're all individual's so I definitely advocate for going with the flow rather than what books /online guides suggest as they've never met your baby

Sparklespangle · 20/01/2022 21:21

Mine was similar. I just tried to make the first nap as late as possible and skip the second one.

This usually made nap time around 11.30 to 1.30. For the first few months it generally made bedtime earlier 6pm instead of 7pm. But he still woke around 7.30 am.

As he got used to the one nap, bedtime slipped back to 7pm.

13/14 months when she was home with us, but 12/13 months after she started nursery bang in 1 year old, she was knackered on an eve though after nursery and would sleep 6.30-6.30

RedRobyn2021 · 21/01/2022 07:48

@Timeturnerplease

No sleep not bedtime!

That is so cute 😂 bless

@Findahouse21

They shouldn't judge!!!

I know someone whose daughter never slept at all during the day but always slept 12 hours at night. They really are all different.

Thank you everyone, I think I feel more confident to give it a go now. She managed a 30 minute nap in the afternoon yesterday 1:30-2 and then was still wide awake at 7 (her usual bedtime) which is mad because she'd usually be out of it after being up that long! Had to go back downstairs and play until 8

I'm just gonna go for it and try to make her morning nap later today. Wish me luck 🤞

A few days after her 1st Birthday. Her naps had been getting shorter and inconsistent for a few weeks so I guessed it was happening.
I actually prefer the one nap, it’s usually around the same time of day and a longer nap, so it’s easier to plan our day/days out together.

BrambleRoses · 21/01/2022 08:21

I’ve found online nearly always seems to say they will sleep more than they do, if you see what I mean!

DS was around that age, he is now 13 months and sleeps for a couple of hours 12-2. It does mean a longish wake window between 2 and bed (aim for 730 but it’s usually more like 745-8) but it works well, he’s sleeping loads better at night.

Alexahelp · 21/01/2022 14:05

12 months on the dot, I wish we’d done it sooner as we were having some horrible awake periods at night. I used to wake mine in the morning from a short nap so she was used to a longer later afternoon sleep, but to begin with the nap started before 12 and was about 2.5 hours long.
