Occasionally - from about 8 weeks
Frequently - one year
Always - five years 🤦🏻‍♀️

Occasionally from 12 weeks. Much more often from 16. I recommend shifts so you go into a different room after the last feed before bed in case baby goes three hours before waking up and you can get a good chunk in. Also get your partner to do the settling and sitting upright after feeds so you get back to sleep quicker.

tothemoonandbackbuses · 16/01/2022 05:53

My second did 3 hours in a row from the start. Ah it was bliss.
My first about 45 mins at a time for months and months it was hell! He had undiagnosed cmpa though.

AdriannaP · 16/01/2022 05:59

Mine is 16 weeks and sleeps up to 9 hour stretches. He slept long stretches from birth though.
My first (also breastfed) slept longer stretches from about 8-12 weeks and I didn’t breastfeed her during the night (so from 8pm-6am) from about 7 months.

nellly · 16/01/2022 06:07

17 weeks here and has slept through 6 nights in total, mostly wakes for one feed

JanuaryPinks · 16/01/2022 06:14

My first was probably about 8 weeks, and second did 4 hour stretches from birth, both exclusively bf. Both slept increasingly long and by 3 months were only waking at around 4am (bed at 7). Unfortunately everything went wrong at the 4 month sleep regression and didn’t get back to that stage til they were about 12 months 😬

EmmaGrundyForPM · 16/01/2022 06:19

DS2 did 11-6 most nights from 11 weeks. By the time I went back to work at 6 months he was doing 7 - 7.

StruggleStreet · 16/01/2022 06:23

I think it can vary so much OP, that’s what makes it so tough, you just don’t know when it’s going to end!
My first slept in 3+ hour blocks basically from birth and was doing 7-8 hour stretches after the first month. From about 6 months she was reliably sleeping 12 hours with one feed, and from 10 months sleeping through completely. She was a dream baby when it came to sleep, I didn’t realise how good I had it.

DS is 14 weeks and still wakes every 1-2 hours. Occasionally, around once a week maybe, he’ll do a longer stretch of 3-4 hours. And then a couple of nights a week he’ll decide to wake every 45 mins. It’s bloody difficult, I’m seriously considering switching to formula now but there are no guarantees that’ll help him sleep better.

helpineedsomebodyhelp · 16/01/2022 06:27

From about 3 months

pawpatrolneedaunion · 16/01/2022 06:32

Dd, 3 and a half. She woke hourly until 2, then 2-3 times a night.

DS, still wakes 4 times a night at 2 and a half.

Don't think it is anything related to breastfeeding though. More about how long it takes to develop the ability to self settle. We tried gentle sleep training DD but it went so badly we let her work it out in her own time. Now at 7 she needs waking up by us!

Moonshine9 · 16/01/2022 06:35

Current breastfed baby is 8.5 months, she slept 3 hr stretches from birth, was bliss! All went downhill at 5 months- starting to improve a bit now but still not getting more than 2 hrs in a row some nights. Most ill get is 4 hrs which is good.

First baby, awful sleeper. Stopped BF at 16 months and sleep improved no end. Slept through consistently from the age of 2.

FTEngineerM · 16/01/2022 06:37

When I night weaned at 8 months

Fispi · 16/01/2022 07:04

DC1 was over 12 months, and at nearly 4 years old is still not reliable for sleeping through and up 5-6am.

DC2 did a 4-5 hour stretch from being a few weeks old and apart from the 4 month sleep regression and bugs still does at 7 months.

It really does depend on the child, I tried everything with DC1 and nothing made much impact until 2.5 yrs. It has still been mostly time.

It is so hard, you do adapt to some extent but it is hellish in the thick of it.

bedington · 16/01/2022 07:12

12 weeks

Sleeplesschristmas · 16/01/2022 07:18

Thanks everyone!! i totally understand it varies so much.. My first did the 45 min sleep for aages but she's an amazing sleeper now.
@StruggleStreet I get it, I've often thought about it... However, from my first I would say. If you can carry on, its sooo worth it. When they are just doing the odd feed in the night its so easy to just whip out boob. Also that last cuddle/feed before they go to sleep for the night becomes so precious. I also think as they get older im sure formula fed babies on average wake as much as breastfed. Think its just the early weeks a breastfed baby can be comatosed with a bottle of formula.good luck! Never happened. I got to three months both times, swapped to formula and we all slept much better thereafter.

Howtotameyourtoddler · 16/01/2022 07:24

My first started doing stretches longer than two hours at around 3 or 4 months, but it was inconsistent. One night she'd wake up only a couple of times for a feed, the next she'd have me up every hour. She didn't sleep through the night until I stopped breastfeeding at 13 months.

Second baby is only five weeks old but he's already sleeping for long stretches. Last night he fed at 9pm, 4am and is just up again now.

While I agree that good sleep is dependent on the baby and largely down to luck (as evidenced by my two!) there is definitely a correlation among my friends between poor sleeping toddlers and extended breastfeeding. However, I'm not sure it's the breastfeeding to blame - those same friends are also very into co-sleeping, anti-sleep training, anti-night weaning and are quite resistant to the idea of strict routines. All anecdata though, doesn't prove a thing!

Quail15 · 16/01/2022 07:24

Baby is now 8 months and has only occasionally slept for more than more than 2.5 hrs. Now in the process of stopping breastfeeding and last night he slept from 7pm until 2am and then 2:30 until 6am. It would have been amazing night's sleep for me if my 3 year old hadn't had several night terrors 😬

Neurodiversitydoctor · 16/01/2022 07:25

I think 10 weeks for a 6-7 hour stretch.

Barbarantia · 16/01/2022 07:40

Both of mine woke up every two hours for their first two years of life.
Awful.
Both were night weaned by a year old/18 months (I can't remember exactly) but they still woke up every 2-3 hours.
Tried sleep training on both (gentle and cry it out). my eldest, went backwards with it. I. E. She'd wake up every 30 mins looking for us. For weeks. My second did not respond to it at all. Just carried on and ignored us comptely.
Both started sleeping through at about 3 years old. But once asleep, nothing wakes them. They are dead to the world for 12 hours. At about age 8, my oldest started going to bed later but still sleeps like a log till morning. About 10 hours a night.

Mattieandmummy · 18/01/2022 19:55

I think it was at least 8 months, DD was a dreadful sleeper until 2 years when it started to improve. Now at 3 years she sleeps all night most nights unless she manages to kick her duvet off and get cold.

qualitygirl · 18/01/2022 19:56

Both sleep 6-7 hours from about 6months
