Is it worth getting a newborn crib that rocks?

Soon-to-be first time mother here, so I'm a bit clueless! I'm looking into suitable beds for a newborn and I'm interested in getting a moses basket for downstairs and a small crib for the first six months for our bedroom (we don't want to co-sleep).

I know all babies are different, but is it worth getting a crib that has a rocking option? The compact, small cribs on Mamas & Papas seem like a good size for our bedroom, but I'd love to hear any other recommendations! Thank you in advance x

This thread is a little old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for a crib or bedside co-sleeper, we’ve recently updated our best cribs page with lots of great options, as tried and tested by Mumsnet users and their babies. We hope you find it useful. Flowers

Not IME. None of my babies slept in a crib anyway!

Also, I had long babies so they only fit in a Moses basket/crib for the first 3 months before they could touch sides. Worth considering if you are spending a lot on a crib. Side sleepers are another alternative?

CaramelWaferAndTea · 14/01/2022 08:26

Never used the rocking on ours. The most efficient thing to do cost wise if you don’t want a side sleeper is to buy a mini cot and use that as more likely to last. My son was long and outgrew side sleeper by 5.5 months.

Not imo. Newborn sleeping best buy for us over our 3 kids was a next to me style crib, they're huge compared to moses baskets, easily last until average baby is around 8 months old. The side drop feature was used constantly

No. Not worth getting a crib at all. My DC were in a Moses basket day/night and then moved into a cot.

I'd just get a standard cot for next to the bed from IKEA (Smaller than a combed but bigger than a crib and low cost), then for downstairs I'd definetly recommend the Tiny Love 3 in 1 Napper. Mine lasted in than for daytime sleeps much longer than in the moses basket, and it has additional features which mean it's more than just somewhere to sleep.

I wouldn't get one that rocks. As then lo will need the rocking to get to sleep and stay asleep.

If you have anything like my lo. She needed to be held for first few weeks and outgrew her moses basket in 3 weeks. Then outgrew the side crib one within 4 months. My kid is tall. We had to progress to the travel cot by then. Then her own cot as under 6 months.

I do like moses baskets. But think depends on your lo and how quick they will grow. I loved side crib. I could doze while settling lo back to sleep. Or you could get a cot and it might be same level as your bed x

We just used a Moses basket. Get a couple of stands for it so you can keep one in the bedroom and one downstairs if it's easier.
I wouldn't want them to get used to being rocked to sleep - setting yourself up for long nights!

BiscuitLover3678 · 14/01/2022 10:24

I’ve never used the rocking ones so I don’t know. The next to me ones are so useful especially if you’re breastfeeding.

If you have enough money you could always get one for naps in the day.

AdriannaP · 14/01/2022 10:29

No. Get one from ebay or fb marketplace if you want to try one. You will find lots that are hardly used.

Another vote for the Next to Me. Great for first 6 months, i don’t even get out of bed when baby wakes.

Footnote · 14/01/2022 10:36

With the second kid we never even built the cot. The first wouldn’t ever stay in it. It was a nexttome.

PrettyBluebells · 14/01/2022 10:36

I was given a rocking crib and used it for both of mine, it was great. That said, it was 20 years ago and looking back a Next to Me would've been much better, but they didn't have them then (or at least they may have but I'd never heard of them).

Thank you so much everyone for your replies! I had never thought about the baby getting used to rocking so that's good advice.
@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz thank you for recommending the Tiny Love 3 in 1 Napper for downstairs. I just looked it up and it looks fab!

We know someone that had a rocking cot, saw them the other day and their baby is now nearly 2... He said the baby sleeps brilliantly in it, but will literally only sleep in it, not in the car, normal cot, pram, in arms... I think from the way he said it it sounded like a double edged sword haha
