How long does climbing out of cot last?!?

Hi! Currently sitting outside 18m old boys bedroom going in and out in and out in silence putting him back into his cot. He has done it 25 times in half an hour. I don't say anything and just put him down. He has no side to his cot just a guard as he launched himself over the top a month or so ago. So he slips out the side of the guard.
How many nights does this go on for till they get bored ?! This is a week now and he does it for about an hour. Any help to a mother going crazy please . And just wants to eat her dinner😬😬😬

@FI0N why does he need to sleep on a mattress on the floor? Once he's asleep he's asleep in his cot bed. He's got a stair gate already too on his door and we close the door. It's just the initial hour once he's gone down that he gets up. Ans then first thing in the morning he stands at the stair gate waiting which is cute

Is an outside lock on the door acceptable or weird? Might try it if it's not weird. That way I have piece of mind he won't get out his room? X

We used to stay with them until they fell asleep (right until they were about 8 and 10) then they'd come into our bed when they woke up, up to about 6 and 8) so were never really awake in their rooms on their own. We did turn their cots into cot beds the day they climbed out though!

Because a cot that he can climb out of is dangerous - he has outgrown it.

And a cot that he can’t get back into himself is pointless.

I just meant remove the cot tonight and put the mattress on the floor. Just as a short term safety measure until you can buy a bed.

If you have a bed already then just go and put it up now.

FI0N · 12/01/2022 20:26

I’m assuming that the cot mattress is already at the lowest position .

grace1991 · 12/01/2022 20:36

@FI0N yeah it's very low. He's not climbing over any bars he's just stepping down out onto the floor

Obviously won't help tonight but definitely get him a bed. A cotbed with a guard rail is useless.

It's taken 6 months for our son to adjust yo his bed 🤦‍♀️. But we did have a baby 3 month ago which obviously unsettled him.

But you said he can’t get back into the cot on his own - that’s useless.

FindingMeno · 12/01/2022 20:47

It lasts until climbing out of bed starts is the short answer Grin

MintyGreenDream · 12/01/2022 20:59

We went straight from cot bed to a small double. He didn't fall out as the size difference was a lot.He loves being all snuggly in there with his 5000 soft toys.

grace1991 · 12/01/2022 21:04

@MintyGreenDream so you think 18m is ok to go into a bed and no guard ??😩😩

Three weeks for DD to transition from cot to bed. A further 3 months for her to stop trying to leave her room

MintyGreenDream · 12/01/2022 21:08

@grace1991 yes definitely put pillows on the floor so if rolls out it's a soft landing 😁

grace1991 · 12/01/2022 21:10

@MintyGreenDream would it
Work for a bit to just take the guard off so
He essentislly has a single bed? We are moving house soon so could get him a proper bed then.

I'm so scared to try! Free roaming toddler at night! So hard to imagine it.

grace1991 · 12/01/2022 21:17

@KiloWhat I'm just worried he will
Roll out. He moves around his current cot so much all night!!

QforCucumber · 12/01/2022 21:18

For Ds1 we didn’t ever bother with a bed guard, we put a double duvet on the floor in case he rolled out (he did, a lot - often just halfway 🤦🏽‍♀️) and let him get on with it pretty much, we’d open the stair gate on his bedroom door when we went to bed and around 4am he would always come and climb into our bed with us.

grace1991 · 12/01/2022 21:19

@QforCucumber were you not worried he would run into other rooms and cause havoc? Or try and get down the stairs !!?!

We stayed until theybsettled. It wasn't a novelty after the first night or two when they realised it wasn't fun, but that we weren't leaving so they didn't need to come find us. I sat reading phone on low too while we had a routine of books/songs then little music thing . Worked brilliantly. Time taken got shorter too.

MintyGreenDream · 12/01/2022 21:22

If there's nothing of danger in there then what's the harm in trying?

RonaCoaster · 12/01/2022 21:23

You should check the instructions on the bed guard. If there’s that small a gap it’s probably too big for the bed. Safety standards require a minimum gap at either end due to the risk of head entrapment.

grace1991 · 12/01/2022 21:24

@RonaCoaster I'll have a look. I might just remove it

@MintyGreenDream it'a just other bedrooms with lamps! Cat food bowls. Etx.

Must be nice to have a kid you can just leave in a room and not have them explode, DD hasn't been ok with me leaving her since about 4 months and she's 3 now. She's also never really slept in an enclosure but she's never really done anything in the night, possibly because she's too clingy to and there was nothing in the bedroom to play with.

Don't plan to put DS in a cot, will go from crib to floor bed, lots of people do this, have to baby proof the room though.

grace1991 · 12/01/2022 21:40

@olderthanyouthink was she never in a cot? Xx
