14 week old rolled onto side in sleep, should I worry?

Our little chap has started sleeping through (for now) and I’ve actually been managing to do the same. This morning I woke at 5am and checked on him, his crib is next to ours, and he was happily sleeping on his side.

I panicked but after checking he was breathing (!) I just left him, and in the morning he was on his back again.

He sleeps in a zippedy zip which is safe for rolling, but he doesn’t yet roll over on the play mat or during tummy time, he just doesn’t seem that interested. He always just wants to ‘chat’ and smile and watch our faces. He has quite a strong neck though and holds it up well when we hold him and in tummy time (until he gets fed up as he hates tummy time). He does sometimes rock around and lift his legs in the crib between sleep cycles before he resettles and has been doing that for a while, but until now always settled on his back.

So just wondering, is this ok? My gut tells me it is - I can’t stay awake all night checking his sleeping position surely? Lord of thing I’ve seen online say to roll him back if I find him like that but surely that’s ridiculous? Thanks!

You don't need to roll him back.
Just place on his back to go to sleep. If they move that's ok

Advice is to stop swaddling I think when rolling over properly

Cafeaulait27 · 11/01/2022 09:37

@jupitermars1345 ok thank you ☺️

He’s in this starfish type thing which is safe for rolling:

He was in a love to dream swaddle but we transitioned out of that and into this.

Ooo I've never seen those ones before
It's funny how different they are
We swaddled dd1 until five months but dd2 until 10 weeks as she wanted her arms free then.
Still not rolling at seven months though 🤣

Cafeaulait27 · 11/01/2022 19:19

@jupitermars1345 yeah we probably could’ve kept him in his love to dream, but because he was getting a bit small for it we thought we may as well go for the zippedy zip. I like how his arms are still covered!

I don’t think he’s very interested in rolling tbh… but we shall see! He never does it in tummy time or on the mat.

Ugh ds used to roll on his front to sleep. I panicked for weeks about it. Theres nothing you can do, you can't stay awake all night. Ds is now 17 and no longer sleeps on his front but instead sleeps with his head wrapped in a extra blanket 😂

BlueSky8 · 11/01/2022 19:29

I remember the first time my DS turned onto his side asleep, I was stressed to hell.
My mum said to leave him, he's comfy, he can roll on to his back fine.

minniep · 11/01/2022 20:10

Once they start moving it's totally normal. He has found his comfy spot. I'm sure you know yourself to make sure there are no dangers in the cot near him but other than that enjoy the fact he is sleeping so well. My Two year old DD has barely done a full nights sleep lol.

Muststopeating · 11/01/2022 20:26

We all go through this panic. I'm on DC3 and still panicked the first time she did it.

Annoyingly she's 6 months and although she's been rolling for 2 months she still doesn't put herself on her front in the night. I'm sure she'd sleep better if she did!!

shouldistop · 11/01/2022 20:37

Ds2 slept on his side from about 12 weeks I think. I always put him down on his back but he rolled onto his side to fall asleep.

Cafeaulait27 · 12/01/2022 09:18

Thank you, it freaked me out but I’m just leaving him as he seems so comfy! Thank you for the reassurance.

If he’s rolling onto his side to sleep, could this mean he’s gone through the developmental leap of sleeping more like an adult and we won’t now get the ‘4 month sleep regression’ everyone keeps warning me of? Is this wishful thinking?!

shouldistop · 12/01/2022 09:58

Ha it's wishful thinking. You could be lucky but my second child has had every sleep regression going. They've sometimes rolled into each other.
At 8 weeks he was sleeping through the night. After 4 months all bets were off.

BlueSky8 · 12/01/2022 10:12

Wishful thinking sadly.
My DS sleep was all over until 18 months.

jupitermars1345 · 12/01/2022 12:37

We never had a four month regression here
She's been sleeping 6-6 ish since 10 weeks and is 7 months now. Minimal wake ups ATM

Only thing that happened was naps went to 30 ish mins most of the time at 4 months ish

Cafeaulait27 · 12/01/2022 13:24

@jupitermars1345 oh wow, here’s hoping we have the same 🤞

He went back to waking for a feed once when he had a growth spurt last week, but now seems to be back to sleeping through 7.30-7.30. Kind of hoping he’s reached that milestone 🤞 but then there’s always teething 😬🤯
