Dummy Decision

My LO is 4months and has a dummy for sleep. We put him in crib awake and he does "self settle" (I know a dummy technically doesn't count) and drift off with little fuss, however when he wakes and dummy is out he will not settle, we simply have to reinsert and he generally goes back, however as you can imagine this can happen multiple times, 4 last night, 8 on Thursday...

So should we get rid of dummy now and just ride it out or wait another 2/3months when he may be able to put back in. Anyone done something similar?

We went cold turkey at about that age and it was the best thing we could've done. Overnight difference to sleeping.

I spent weeks sleeping next to him and putting it back in 7-8 times a night until he could do it himself.

This led to him struggling to find the one dummy he had so I bought more. At its peak he had a halo of 9 dummies around him at bed time just so he could sleep through.

If you can bare going cold turkey do it!

We kept the dummy and just put a few in her cot so she could normally find one. You can also buy little comforters you can attach them to. Didn't take long for dd to put the dummy back in herself. We weren't ready to get rid of dummies

This is the very reason we chucked the dummies at this age. It’s not worth the hassle. Go cold turkey, spend a few nights/naps sush patting and it’ll change your life

4 months can be bad for sleep. 8 replaces suggests the dummy is a red herring and they’re still learning to connect sleep cycles which is why they’re waking, and actually the dummy gives you a quick and easy way to get them back to sleep. I’d vote for push the cot next to the bed so you don’t have to get up and ride out what is likely a temporary sleep regression. About 6 months, definitely by 7 months, they should also crack replacing it themselves and then you just throw 10 in the cot and hopefully happy days!

Best time to go cold turkey.

We ditched at 6 months and saw an overnight improvement in sleep. That said, as we’ve hit rough patches since I’ve missed having an easy no-cry way of settling my baby. I don’t regret it though
