Five month old waking every two hours

So I've posted about sleep here before but I'm starting to be pressured by my DH to consider sleep training as DD is now waking every two hours all night long looking for the boob to resettle her.

I think we've already been through the sleep regression as her sleep did improve for a while - and I'm pretty sure we have two problems:

  1. That her day naps aren't long enough - as she usually goes down for 30 mins, 4 times a day and then wakes up and is impossible to get back to sleep
  1. That she's not able to settle herself without breastfeeding in the middle of the night.

I'm at my wits end, as sleep training feels drastic to me but I'm also exhausted and can't keep doing this much longer.

(We've tried co-sleeping already and I can't say there was any improvement with that either!)

How often does she feed during the day?

Chanel05 · 06/01/2022 10:39

Is she warm enough?

Possibly teething. Good luck!! (A tiny bit of Anbesol before going to bed or when they are whining a lot is your best friend! If things get too tough half dose paracetamol)

You need to break the sleep association, I think you know that already. There will be crying involved but you don’t have to let her cry for long.

She feeds every three hours during the day which seems like a good length for her as she shows no signs of wanting more feeds and will turn away if I offer them more!

I can't see any teeth but will try some of the gel just in case!

Yes I think we need to break the association with sleep and boob but I'm worried how that's going to go.

Does she have a proper feed at night or does she just fall asleep at the boob pretty quickly? My boy was doing this so I decided it was time to stop and do some sleep training. The first few nights we did whatever else we could to settle him just to break the boob association and then worked from there. We had about two horrendous nights and then a massive improvement where he basically started sleeping through consistently very quickly. So it really worked for us.
Obviously it doesn't always work like that and those first couple of nights were tough so I would say you have to feel sure it's right for you, otherwise it's probably not going to work. You don't really sound like you are that sure. It sounds like the pressure is coming from DH? I'd say trust your own instincts. You'll know if it's for you, and if the time is right.
