Is my baby too cold at night?

Hi everyone, I’m a first time mum to a 10 week old baby. His sleep is what I would consider normal with it varying with a very good night sleeping 5 hours (very occasional) some nights sleeping 3 hour chunks and others waking every 1-2 hours. When he was first born I used selluar blankets but have found he sleeps better now in a 2.5 tog bag. Following the instructions based on temperature I put him in the bag with no vest, just a sleep suit, however I think he might be getting too cold and waking more. I’m nervous about overheating him so has anyone one got any advice or did you just also use a vest as well as a sleep suit? Thanks

Try a vest under the sleepsuit
What temperature does the room get down to overnight?

I always found that following the temperature guidelines that grobag give worked well for our's. Mostly it was vest + 2.5 tog sleepsuit in winter and 1 tog in warmer weather.

Does he feel cold?

MGee123 · 04/01/2022 10:16

I think babies have different needs for this. I followed the 2.5 tog bag instructions and put our baby in a long sleeve vest only, and she was freezing! Our room is 17-18 degrees at night. She now has a short sleeve vest and a sleepsuit on which seems to work fine. It depends a bit on your room temp and your baby so is a bit of trial and error to be honest.

Stick your hand inside to feel their tummy to get an idea of how warm they actually are. But I do find the grobag charts err on the side of chilly and my kids have always needed an extra layer.

Kbyodjs · 04/01/2022 10:30

I always went one more layer than the instructions with my DS as he was too cold without that whereas my DD was fine with it; she’s older now but always a bit more on the hot side whereas my DS feels the cold more. One extra vest shouldn’t cause them to over heat

We had to go with one extra vest too.

Their hands are meant to be freeeezing in the night but down the back of their neck, well, their back, should be warm.

Thank you everyone. I’ve been really overthinking this. I think I will try the vest as well to begin with. Yes, as someone else mentioned his hands are freezing in the night!! We do have the tommee tipper room and bath temperature which I use but even I feel the cold sometimes. Plus when the midwife first came round when he was born she said the house was a bit hot for him and that it’s better for babies to be cooler so I think I may have been a bit too literal with this!

Years and years ago my DS kept crying one night and I couldn't work out why. He was clean, fed, winded, etc. I looked up "learn what your baby's different cries mean" in The Baby Whisperer book. DS was crying in a specific way - with a trembling lower lip, I think - and the book said he was cold. I put an extra blanket on him and he stopped crying, looked at me like "AT BLOODY LAST," then went to sleep immediately.

I can't remember exactly what his cry was like, but it was different to hungry or overtired.

I always put an extra layer. Vest, sleep suit and 2.5 tog sleeping bag. Room varies from 18-20 degrees. As the night goes on it gets cooler more towards 17-18 so I think they need the extra layer x

We don't have our heating on overnight, i do vest, sleep suit and cardi with a warm gro bag, my daughter would get cold and wake otherwise, on the more milder nights i drop the cardi

Fancyties · 05/01/2022 10:33

Haha maybe I freeze my lo. Room Is 18 sometimes less in middle of night. She has long sleeve vest and 2.5 sleeping bag
