Hey everyone. My 5 week old keeps getting bad trapped wind at night. Spoke to my HV today and told me all the basics, keep upright after food, burp, anti colic bottles, infacol. Im doing all of this, even keeping her upright after feeds for 30 mins which is hard as she likes to cluster feed atm! But still no luck. Everytime lay her on her bacl she starts figeting and getting uncomfortable. Im normally up with her between 4-6 hours! Any suggestion?

Dummy.

Keep her upright for longer. If its reflux causing the problems, you need to give it about an hour. Sorry, I've been there and done that at night!

Is she BF? Have you cut out foods that could be upsetting her stomach?

If she's formula fed, it could be CMPA causing reflux.

Have you tried to put the cot on an incline.

Tag team with your partner so you get some rest.

Have you tried some baby massage techniques like stroking the belly and lifting the babies legs up to the belly to help ease the trapped wind? My health visitor showed me some techniques when we had this problem.

SunnySide1992 · 30/12/2021 00:22

I have tried the massages and cycle but no luck! She is maiy breastfed with the odd formula bottle if im sleeping dh gives her one. Ive had alot of trouble with BF, i had a really really bad mastitis infection and now im worried she doesnt get full up from my breast.

Could it be reflux? If so what can i get? I use infacol but dont see any difference. Plus the trouble is when i keep her upright after feeding she falls asleep but i ghess thats okay? Even then as soon as i lay her down she wakes up. Shes on a moses basket, in a next to me crob which is on a angle

Could you try raising the head of her basket/cot slightly so her head is higher than her feet? May help her feel more comfortable and abit more 'upright' when she's lying down

I can't remember from what age you can start this, but gripe water was so much better than infacol for us, maybe try that?

NotMaryWhitehouse · 30/12/2021 08:02

Gripe water was better for us too, infacol was not great. But once we were sure it was digestive, rather than a lack of burping (ie it was needing to fart rather than burp !) we used dentinox when he had bottles, which by this point was most feeds.

He's now 11 months and farts like a trooper without the pain, for which I am very glad- it was absolutely horrible watching him struggle when I was also massively sleep deprived!

Have you tried swaddle and white noise? Life saver for me!!

For reflux - my doctor prescribed gaviscon for babies to put in her bottles which was great. We also used a safe positioner (HV approved) so she was slightly raised at night which helped

From reading another thread yesterday, infacol can apparently make it worse OP.

You'll know if it's reflux as she'll only stop crying when held upright. You can get various medications such as infant gaviscon, lansoprasole etc... my ds grew out of it at 5 months. He still didn't sleep through but it was much improved and so much less crying. It was a huge relief.
