FTM help pls - newborn uncomfortable and not sleeping

Hi everyone

First time Mum here :) My baby is 2 weeks old and for the past week she has been really unsettled when we put her down at night.

She is very settled and sleeps well when being held throughout the day. However, as soon as she is put into her snuzpod crib next to our bed, she constantly wriggles, squirms, pulls her knees up, grunts and makes little shrieking noises. She tends not to cry fully which makes me think she isn't in too much pain but something is clearly causing her discomfort. The second I pick her back up, she relaxes abs sleeps immediately. She has been passing wind A LOT and gets the hiccups a lot when put on her back. Also has some coughing when feeding although this is very infrequent.

I am breastfeeding and questioning whether it could be silent reflux (as she is never actually sick) or is this just her digestion adjusting? Or could she be dairy intolerant so would me cutting out dairy in my diet help her? Her pooping habits have changed too, she now only goes once every two days, meaning when she finally goes a lot comes out!

Sorry for the long post, just desperately looking for help as i hate seeing her so uncomfy and we're also exhausted from no sleep!

Would love some advice if anyone has experienced similar? X

Hi!
No direct experience but helpful bump.
I would say that at 2 weeks baby just wants to be held (so that's very normal!)
If you try to put LO down for a nap during the day, does the same thing happen?
I'm sure someone will be along soon with lots of good suggestions!
You're doing great!

Thank you for the lovely message. She seems more settled in the day but she is being held more during the day. She still squirms when being held but I think she is more comforted so relaxes more so than when in her crib. Also, she has more feeds at night so think that is causing more wind. We're going to try colic water today and see if that helps. Then I'll do dairy free for a couple if days. Process of elimination I guess! 🙏🏼 Xxx

You're not going to like this answer, but: she sounds like a perfectly normal newborn. If something was really wrong, like reflux or dairy allergy, she'd be crying.

All newborns' digestive systems really don't work that well at first and all newborns are noisy grunty sleepers. I'd recommend a swaddle and letting her sleep on or next to you as much as possible.

Fourth trimester xxx

I wouldn't start with the gripe water yet. Newborn babies are noisy and do grunt etc. It could just be that he is windy and needs more winding or wants to be next to you. 4th trimester it's not uncommon for baby to just want to be on you and held.

If you want to try cutting out dairy it will take more than a few days dairy free before you could say you'd tried it iyswim.
Some babies just like to be held Smile congrats on your new arrival

cherrypie66 · 11/12/2021 13:05

It doesn't sound as though there is anything really wrong she would be screaming If there was. New babies are unsettled a lot and if you are holding her during the day she probably just prefers to be held at night too ! Congratulations

I have had 2 babies in the last 2 years so I have very recent experience with this, to be honest like others have said babies are noisy sleepers. They grunt and squirm but they're eyes are shut, if they need you they will actually cry. At 2 weeks I wouldn't start using gripe water or cutting food types out it's way too soon.
I noticed you said the baby feeds more at night time, try ensure they are fed max every three hours during the day even if you must wake them. Also ensure that your baby is getting well winded after a feed there are many videos on doing this that I had to look into as well! Also have them swaddled next to you, some babies do prefer to be held alot but when sleep is important at night I would definitely try work on having your baby feel comfortable in their sleep space. Hope this helps.

Congratulations.
This all sounds very normal to me.
If she was in discomfort she would not relax when picked up/she would let you know by crying and screaming.
They make a lot of noise when asleep..my baby stopped being so noisy around 12 weeks old
Have you tried a swaddle and a dummy? These helped mine at that age
