Does anyone have a Ewan? We're considering buying one. Did it work/ did your little one like it?

We have one: it didn’t work in the very early days but at some point just became a fixture, and then part of the bedtime routine from 3 months ish. Probably the most useful when moving to own room though, with the automatic setting to come on if they squeak a bit. We had white noise playing through an old phone as well.

It has to be set to the womb noises though, the harp music gives me flashbacks to newborn exhaustion.

Get rechargeable batteries if you are using the automatic option.

In conclusion, nice to have but not essential. DS is nearly two now and sometimes I go in to check and he is cuddling Ewan, chosen over a few stuffed creatures.

@MelonTits (great name btw!) that's adorable about the cuddling. It's good to hear that after 2 years it's still getting used, too.

@Evianontoast We had one and personally it really didn’t work for us. It has a cry sensor so the white noise comes back on as soon as baby makes a noise but our DS didn’t cry as soon as he woke so by the time he made a noise and the sheep came back on, he was far too wide awake for it to help him drift back off. I also found that when the white noise would stop (I think it’s 20mons it plays for) our DS would often wake as soon as it stopped. I found myself waking as soon as it stopped and having to press it constantly in the night. I also couldn’t tell you how many nights I had to do a max dash to change the batteries in the middle of the night 😅 DS sleeps MUCH better with constant white noise. We gave Ewan away and bought a Hatch white noise machine instead and it’s perfect for us! Have so many friends that absolutely swore by Ewan though 🤷🏻‍♀️

I feel like Ewan is a bit like getting a cervical sweep… (bear with me).
I have a 9 month old terrible sleeper, I do have Ewan but he doesn’t help her sleep. So I don’t particularly mention him etc. I have a friend who has a 9 month old really good sleeper. She also has Ewan. She recommends him to everyone and is always waxing lyrical about what a godsend he is and how he helps her baby sleep etc. But is it Ewan making a difference or is it just biological and developmental differences between the babies…
One thing I do think the white noise in Ewan is good for is masking other sounds, so if you have a creaky floor board on your way out of baby’s room, if they’re sleeping in your room and you want to get changed, turn over in bed, have a whispered conversation etc, it’s not as stark in the silence if there’s white noise playing. You can play that through another device though and for longer (Ewan lasts 20 mins).

PS the cervical sweep analogy is that people who have sweeps that don’t work wouldn’t particularly go around mentioning it, whereas those those have a sweep then go into labour later that day or night, it becomes practically part of their birth story and they go on about how the sweep worked etc and others hear that and it perpetuates. But was it actually the sweep, or would you have just gone into labour that night anyway…? Just like is it actually Ewan or would that baby have been a good sleeper anyway…? Grin

RedRobin100 · 11/12/2021 05:03

I found it excessively loud. I had to put it at other side of room wrapped in a towel

Not sure it particularly worked loads either but ca be a good sleep aid/shite noise/habit setter

We didn’t have one with a sensor though and it only last a short time. I’d rather a noise machine that is constant until switched off.

I’d suggest a marpac hush instead. Apparently for white noise to work best it needs to be on throughout the night, we had a Ewan and like a pp it didn’t help resettle during the night as came on too late. However the marpac can be on continuously (it is also rechargeable via usb so we’re not continually buying batteries and is small so handy for the pram/popping in a suitcase).

GoBrookeYourself · 11/12/2021 05:50

I wouldn’t recommend one- we got one and maybe we were just unlucky but had to replace it 3 times as it stopped working and the 20 minutes it plays for wasn’t long enough for DS to get into a deep sleep. Now we just have a white noise machine which plays all night, we’ve had it for 4 years now and it’s still going strong so we’ve bought one for DS2 too. I’d just go for a standard white noise machine but some people swear by Ewan!

I love our Ewan! DS is 3 now and still has 'Sheepy' on at bedtime (even though he's a bit grotty nowadays 😂). I always buy them as a baby gift and rave about them to pregnant friends...I think I should be on the payroll!

Dunnowhatalltheacronymsmean · 11/12/2021 06:17

Love the cervical sweep analogy.

If you do get one, I second the pp who recommend getting the rechargeable version. Dunno about DD but Ewan definitely helps me drift back to sleep! Αnd is nice and cuddly. We use it on the womb setting while she falls asleep and have another white noise thing that stays on all night so there's still something going after the 20 minutes. Like to think they help DD's sleep but who knows.. Our other white noise thing is a lumie lamp which is super handy for nighttime wakes as has a dimmer thing meaning you can keep lighting low.

Etherealhedgehog · 11/12/2021 06:24

White noise is far more helpful for baby sleep if it's a constant through the night - as a PP said, by the time they start crying they're generally too awake for it to usher them into the next sleep cycle. You're better off getting a proper white noise machine - we got a Dream Egg one and are still using it (DD is one now but still in our room because one bed flat, and I think it helps her not wake up when we're clattering around)

2021mumma · 11/12/2021 06:26

We had one it didn’t help us. We saw a sleep consultant that said the 20mins is no good that you need continuous white noise - we bought a white noise machine off Amazon

Evianontoast · 11/12/2021 09:02

It sounds like the really good parts of Ewan are the white noise part- for which I may not need an actual Ewan but something that can maybe be usb recharged and longer lasting.

Thanks all!

There is a u tube 14 hour white noise hairdryer sound, I just used to put that on my phone.

lambo88 · 14/12/2021 20:53

We used Ewan when our little boy was a baby but it doesn't stay on for long...I've heard my hummy is good...we just use white noise on the iPad from an app and it stays on for 8 hours xx
