Sleeping bag dilemma

hensloe · 08/12/2021 23:05

Hi!
8 month old has a 2.5 tog sleeping bag.
I dress him in a long sleeved vest as recommended by grobag/etc underneath said sleeping bag.
But he's waking a lot and having tried almost everything else, I'm suspecting its the temperature. Is he too hot?
What do your little ones sleep in at the moment, and at what temp is the room?
Could 2.5 be too warm, even in these cooler months? Thanks!

What temperature is your room? He could also be too cold. Mine wore a vest and sleepsuit under a 2.5tog bag when it started to get colder

The guide on the Gro bags errs on the side of caution, I assume because it’s dangerous for babies to overheat.

In winter DD had short sleeved vest under a long sleeved sleepsuit plus the 2.5 sleeping bag.

Sweetsaremyfave · 08/12/2021 23:20

Might be too cold. I was told by my midwife that a baby who is cold will wake and cry, a too warm baby won’t tell you.

What temp is his room?

Aria2015 · 08/12/2021 23:26

What temp is your lo's room? I find the recommended tog and sleep clothes are not enough for mine so have always gone with more. My lo is 1 years old and is in a 3.5 tog and has a short sleeve vest plus long sleeve sleepsuit. Her room has gone as low at 16c this week but is mainly at 17 / 18 c.

I tried our baby in a long sleeve vest under her 2.5 tog sleeping bag and she was freezing! Room temp was 17-18 which instructions suggested meant this should be fine. She now wears a short sleeve vest, sleep suit and 2.5 tog bag and this seems to work. Room temp 17-18.

I found the grobag sleep suits with padded arms were needed for cold nights

Our room goes down to 14c
6 month old in a long sleeve vest, sleepsuit and 2.5 tog bag

The old saying goes 'cold babies cry, hot babies die'. It's just a saying but it's something I've always borne in mind.

What temperature is your room? 2.5 tog is for 16-20 degrees overnight and I'd have thought at this time of year most rooms would be in that range unless you have your heating on all night?

dementedpixie · 09/12/2021 07:25

@jupitermars1345 I think 3.5tog bags are designed for that sort of temperature

Yogaandcocoa · 09/12/2021 08:23

You should be able to tell if he's warm by feeling the temp of his back or chest

RedRobin100 · 09/12/2021 08:25

Vest, pyjamas, 2.5tog bag, room is about 19C, baby 18 months. Seems fine.
Might let room get a little cooler.

jupitermars1345 · 09/12/2021 08:38

Ah she always feels really warm when I pick her up in the morning :)
And she sleeps really well so sure she'd let us know if cold . We don't have central heating and it's all electric

FinallySomeNormality · 09/12/2021 14:21

DS2's (6months) room is between 16 and 14 degrees atm - we have an old, draughty house that we're in the process of renovating.

I had him in 2.5 tog, long sleeve vest and sleepsuit but he continually woke at 4am-6am... didn't want a feed, didn't want a cuddle but would always drift off again happily if I popped a blanket on him. He's now in a 3.5tog sleeping bag, long sleeve vest and sleepsuit and for the past few nights hasn't woken at all so I do think he was cold.

My first baby ran very hot - the grobag temp guidance was too much for him and he always wore a layer less than suggested. DS2 runs very cold and I've noticed the guidance is too conservative for him so we pop an extra layer on.

Vicky1989x · 09/12/2021 17:39

Unsure of my DDs room temp but she sleeps in a sleeveless vest, sleepsuit and 1.5 tog but the heating is on so is really warm. She sleeps just fine. I’d say if he’s waking a lot then he’s probably cold, however, there is a sleep regression between 8-10 months so could also be that!

JustWonderingIfYou · 09/12/2021 17:42

3.5tog slumbersuit with arms, vest, socks and sleepsuit. It gets down to 12-14c at the mo.

You really need to find the temp of the room.

Shrewoodle · 12/12/2021 07:23

DS's room is usually about 18-19 and he has a vest and fleecy sleepsuit under a 2.5 tog if the temp is 18 or less, maybe with his legs out of the sleepsuit if he just needs the warmth on top (he likes to be on the warmer side). If it's higher 19/ 20 he'll have a vest and lighter sleepsuit. Anything above 20 just a vest.

Wooky8 · 12/12/2021 07:48

He definitely sounds cold. You should feel his chest and back but I always used vests + babygrows + 2.5 tog in most weathers unless it was heatwave etc. For winter months use vest + babygrow + 3.5 tog with arms.

lambo88 · 14/12/2021 20:50

Have u got a gro egg hun...we used to see how hot/cold the room was then follow the gro egg charts on what to wear at night xx

Raggeo · 14/12/2021 20:58

At the moment my son's room is 17-18 degrees at night. He is in a 2 tog sleeping bag with pyjamas and either a short or long sleeved vest, I'm not fussy which.
When it got cold last winter he was in a 2.5tog sleeping bag, fleecy pyjamas and a long sleeved vest but we were living in a very cold house.
