Our first baby. He has colic so on advice from our health visitor we’ve started a bedtime routine about 3 weeks ago as we told her he seems to like his crib and doesn’t have the colicky crying overnight. He has a bath at 7.30, then feed at 8ish and then in bed by 8.45-9pm (we keep him upright for about 30mins after a feed). One of us goes to bed at the same time so he isn’t alone.

He’s formula fed. He usually wakes about 1-2am and again at 5am but it’s now almost 5 and get hasn’t woken once! So naturally I am awake staring at him and listening to him breathing.

Is this ok? I’m terrified of sids and him sleeping too deeply. Also with him having colic I am always there’s something wrong with him even though gp says he’s healthy.

He was drinking about 950ml per day but when he had his vaccinations last week it went down to about 800ml for a few days. Then the last couple of days as he’s been going longer at night it’s meant he’s ended up skipping a feed and he does drink more at each feed to make up for it but it’s still less than 950, more like 850mls.

Am I just paranoid? Is it a one off? Should I be worried?

He’s 14 pounds, was born almost 7 pounds. Thanks

@Cafeaulait27 enjoy it while it lasts🙂 dd did similar at 11 weeks she slept from 9-7 one day. Generally she started sleeping about 8 hours 9-5/10-6 she's bf.
At 19weeks now we have been having quite a lot of night wakes the past few weeks but she had the cold and then got her jabs. Last night has been better bed at 10 feed at 1 and just up for another feed now at 6

My baby doesn’t have colics but seems fine to me. My 11 week old sleeps 6-7hours most nights and had done since birth (he is breastfed). Just make sure your baby is not too hot. I am sure he will be hungry when he wakes up 😅

babyturtle19 · 08/12/2021 05:27

My baby is 14 weeks now but had very bad colic and reflux for the first 6 weeks which led to hospital visits etc and she's on medication for this now which has helped. She was and still is a very small baby and struggled to put on weight. We were advised by the hospital paediatricians and the health visitor to wake her to feed every 3-4 hours if she doesn't wake herself. We still do that now and she often dream feeds so stays asleep if she's in a deep sleep. I'd suggest maybe checking in with your health visitor if you're worried Smile

Enjoy it whilst it lasts as others have said! My DS2 slept through the night from 8-16 weeks then 4 month sleep regression hint and he was a terrible sleeper for ages. We are going through the 2 year one now and he has reverted back to a terrible sleeper and ready to start the day at 4am 😔

Mine slept for 7+ hours at 9 weeks.

Didn't last.

She became unsettled when she had her jabs at 12 weeks and then had a growth spurt so needed more night time feeding.

Also don't wake your baby up to feed at night unless a doctor recommends it.

Cafeaulait27 · 08/12/2021 05:39

@Smurf123 that is good to know, thank you!

@AdriannaP thank you, we are very careful to make sure he’s not too hot, if anything we were worried he’d be too cold as his love to dream sleeping bag is for 20-24 degrees and it’s slipped to 18. He seems ok though, he has woken up now very alert and screamed for his bottle while we changed his nappy!

@babyturtle19 thank you, how is your baby doing now? Hope she’s doing well!
He’s gained weight really well and is 14 pounds now so has doubled his birth weight, so I don’t think they would be concerned but I will call tomorrow anyway just in case.

The colic is brutal, he cries all evening inconsolably and a bit during the day too although he settles better in the day. He does seem to nap enough in the day (mostly on us)

@KRoo22 oh wow! Yeah even if he sleeps through for a while now, there’s the teething and sleep regressions! 😬 hope yours sleeps through again soon!

@RedWingBoots I’m sure that’ll happen to us too! He was very unsettled after his jabs last week and woke more than usual x

She is lots better now with the colic thankyou. But I remember how awful it was so I feel your pain. It gets better!!
She would scream hysterically and flail her arms around continuously from about 10pm til 4am every night. It did happen in the day occasionally but was definitely a night thing in our situation. We tried infacol which helped a bit so you could try that. But the medication for the silent reflux was a game changer. We had no idea she had that and we'd seen so many doctors before one of them suggested that could be adding to it and she was definitely right! Could it be possible your LO has silent reflux as well as colic?

She is so much better now with the colic though so I promise you it will get better

She's almost 11 pounds now, still small on her growth charts but a very happy and healthy little girl so she seems to be thriving.

I hope the colic settles for your LO soon, it's must be so tough for them and for you.

Cafeaulait27 · 08/12/2021 08:53

@babyturtle19 glad to hear she’s improving!

Yeah we have infacol, comfort milk and gaviscon on the go! We don’t use the gaviscon much as it makes him constipated though. What did you have for reflux? We don’t think the gaviscon does much.

Really hoping the colic will start to improve soon 🤞

Meant to say as well, it’s mostly evening for us with the screaming. Starts around 5 but can be earlier. We give him a bath at 7.40 now, he doesn’t cry in the bath but does when we undress and dry him!! It’s so hard dealing with inconsolable crying, people who haven’t experienced colic just can’t understand what it’s like

We give her lanzoprozole once a day which has really helped with the reflux. She used to projectile vomit her feeds before and this has calmed it right down. It's noticeable too if she has a dose a bit late or spits some of it out. We increase the dose as her weight increases on the doctors guidance. I'd definitely suggest a chat with your GP about this instead of gaviscon. A friend of mine was on gaviscon and switched too and it's better for her baby as well.

I understand completely how you feel. The inconsolable screaming is heart breaking as absolutely nothing you can do to help. Just keep cuddling and reassuring. You are definitely right though, nobody understands until they see it.

One thing we did was video it happening so we could show the doctor because every time anyone saw her in the day time she was fine, so this meant they could see what nights were like.
