If your baby sleeps with white noise...

How the hell do you sleep?! ๐Ÿ˜ณ my god, I HATE the sound ๐Ÿ˜“ weโ€™re having a real problem with noisy neighbours and the bedrooms in our house have adjoining walls with them. Heโ€™s slept with white noise since he was about 3 months as itโ€™s the only way weโ€™ve been able to stop him getting disturbed by them. He slept in our room until 10/11 months as he was still feeding in the night and I preferred having him close to me so the white noise was on in our room and it was horrendous. Heโ€™s now 13 months, in his own room, still has white noise and the noise of it through the baby monitor drives me up the wall ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

As soon as I wake up for any reason and hear the noise I just canโ€™t tune it back out and thatโ€™s me awake for at least an hour or so. The longest stint of sleep Iโ€™ve had since DS was born is around 2 hours!

I got used to it. Choose a nice white noise. I like rainfall. Some are definitely more pleasant than others.

Not very helpful, but I think I grew to quite like it. I actually struggle to sleep without it myself these days Blush but don't really notice it, IYSWIM, more just notice if it's absent.

Perhaps if it's really bothering you then you could just go cold turkey and get rid of it. I know you're concerned about the noisy neighbours but it's amazing what babies and children can sleep through if they're accustomed to it.

PanettoneSeason · 03/12/2021 05:25

@pinksquash13 Yeah weโ€™ve tried a few but this one seems to work well for him. Might need to try a few more!

@Liervik That could be an option with the monitor. Iโ€™ve been trying to avoid that one as I try not to let him get to the โ€œawake and cryingโ€ stage. Quite often he just stirs looking for his dummy and if Iโ€™m quick he just drifts off back to sleep as soon as he has it but once heโ€™s awake and crying itโ€™s a bit of of an ordeal to get him back down.

@GiltEdges tried it unfortunately. Heโ€™s not a heavy sleeper and the noise from next door definitely still wakes him. Thumping music at all hours of the night and they slam doors constantly!
My DH works abroad and is away a few weeks at a time but whens heโ€™s home loves the white noise and is asleep within seconds. But then, he sleeps through absolutely anything. He didnโ€™t even used to wake when DS was in our room and would wake crying, nevermind now that heโ€™s though a baby monitor ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Try pink noise on YouTube I find it a lot less annoying, there is also a portable white noise machine ( which is the pink noise ) on Amazon

I have this and it's great as it's portable and there's a clip on it so you can attach it on the inside of the crib so it will sound loud to your baby because it's right beside them

My 1yo sleeps with white noise and I used to have to wear ear plugs when he was in my room, I could still hear him really well through the ear plugs!!

Now in his own room our monitor has some kind of setting where the sound only kicks in if he makes a noise. I also have the monitor on the other side of the room and cover it with a bit of fabric so the light doesn't bother me. He hardly ever wakes now so I mainly use it to check what he is up to, the temp and if his sleeping position is OK.

I didn't read your post right sorry I didn't realise it was annoying you on the monitor, I have no ideas sorry
Fancyties · 03/12/2021 06:36

ear phones when I'm a bit too sensitive to the sound that night or if I can't bare to hear it. I don't use ear plugs as I found it blocks the sound out completely as well as not hearing my lo, so ear phone Jack's do the job as mutes it all - helps me not hear my oh snoring too ๐Ÿ˜ด

My lo is a light sleeper too, I feel your pain even a conversation will wake her ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ I was so loud around her too when she was young too.

soughsigh · 05/12/2021 15:09

The angelcare monitors have a vox function which filters out constant noise and only kicks in when a new sound happens - so you can hear baby stirring but not the white noise.

I don't know if other monitors have it, but it's a lifesaver for us.

ShirleyPhallus · 05/12/2021 15:11

At 13 months old Iโ€™d turn the sound off and just check the video when I wake up to see if heโ€™s ok. If he wakes up youโ€™ll hear him through the walls

SugarlumpsesBumpses · 05/12/2021 15:11

I love white noise! Will often put some on for me as well as DD

SugarlumpsesBumpses · 05/12/2021 15:14

Also we leave the sound off the monitor as we can hear her through the doors anyway - she is not quiet when she wakes lol

PanettoneSeason · 05/12/2021 21:44

@soughsigh Ohh that might be worth a try! We have the BT Smart monitor at the moment and are on our 3rd one so far ๐Ÿ˜ they keep replacing it as it keeps developing faults so weโ€™ve been looking at just buying a new one anyway!

@ShirleyPhallus Iโ€™m definitely not up for turning the sound off. He doesnโ€™t tend to cry when he wakes unless thereโ€™s something wrong but heโ€™s a climber and Iโ€™ve woken numerous times to strange noises and itโ€™s him very eagerly trying to climb his cot while in his sleeping bag ๐Ÿ˜ฌ Itโ€™s actually pretty hard to hear him without a monitor due to our house layout

I can't sleep without white noise. We have had the same machine for about 6/7 years now and love it. When we went on holiday and forgot it, we both hardly slept for 3 nights.
