Tips to get baby to sleep in crib?

My baby is just over a week old so still very little. He actually sleeps really well (touch wood!) and is happy in a sleepyhead or asleep on one of us, but he doesn't like sleeping in his crib (its a bedside one). He wakes up and fusses after a few minutes. We are staying up when hes asleep in the sleepyhead because its not recommended for him to sleep overnight in it, but it seems totally mad to be awake when he's asleep!!

Are there any tips or tricks to get him to sleep as soundly in his crib? Thanks!

Check out the fourth trimester; sorry, yet to meet a week old baby that will sleep in a crib.

They want contact, in my experience. Maybe try swaddling?

You can put a hot water bottle in the crib to heat it up so it feels warm and remove before you put baby in.

Also some people swear by white noise but it doesn't really work for my 7 week old.

Babies can be a little bit grizzly and cry a little before the sleep. Ours cries for maybe 3/4 minutes before settling but if they are really crying obviously it isn't a settling cry. Putting him down drowsy or half awake means that they won't wake up in shock at being in a new place.

Good luck! We spent the first week watching our baby sleep too.

Thank you!

Just an update - last night he did sleep in his crib all night, waking up for feeds every 3 hours almost on the dot.

We moved the crib away from the bed (it was a bedside one with the side down on my side of the bed. I wondered maybe he knew I was close so didn't fancy the crib if my chest was nearby), plus we put him at the bottom so his feet touched the edge and he seemed to like that. Also we played a heartbeat sound in the background.

Also my midwife showed us this move where you cradle him in one arm, cross his feet and then hold them under the soles gently with your other hand. Then you walk around moving your weight heavily from one leg to the other- its supposed to mimic being gently squished in the womb and my waddling towards the end of pregnancy- he loves it and he nods off pretty quickly!

Great that he slept in the crib all night

To add to the advice, we found putting one of our t-shirts over the top crib sheet as kind of an extra top layer for her to sleep on helped as well to act as a familiar smell
