Babies late bedtime

My baby is 9 weeks today and for the past week I’ve been trying to put her to bed and do a bedtime routine at around 7.30. She will fall asleep in my arms and won’t let me put her down but by 11pm, it’s like a switch has been flipped and she will go down really easy. She’ll then sleep till 9/10am (waking for feeds obviously!)

I know about the 4th trimester etc but why is it at 11pm she will suddenly go down? I’m happy for her to go down then as it’s similar bedtime to us, however it’s different if we have plans first thing in the morning and have to get up at 7/8 because she looks exhausted Sad

Has anyone else experienced this with their little night owl?

Also should point out she’s not overtired as doesn’t go longer than 1.5hr for naps and she isn’t distressed when I’m trying to put her down, she just wakes up and gets really fussy

I had this with my DD and found bedtime just slowly moved earlier as she got older. It was a bit of a bore tbh but it did sort itself out and I'm sure it will for you too

We are doing the same currently with 8 week old twins... tried and tested with our 2 year old... what times are the feeds?

I’m bf on demand but she tends to wake every 2/3 hours during the night

Can you change your morning plans for now? My baby was the same and slowly started waking earlier, I think at around 5 months or so we were in a pretty solid 7:30pm-6am ish routine. I used to spend the time dozing. Enjoy the lie ins and early morning snoozes while you can!

Yep, 16 week old DD still has a "bedtime" of around 11pm. She has also been known to still be up at midnight. The earliest she's ever done is 9pm and that was two nights running when she also slept for really long stretches between feeds. I felt amazing and was so excited about that being my life but unfortunately it hasn't been repeated yet!

Mine was exactly the same. I stressed a lot about trying to get him into a "normal bedtime" of around 7/8 but it just didn't happen till he was a lot older! In hindsight I wish I spent less time stressing about it and spending hours alone in the bedroom trying to get him to sleep early and just rolled with it. As others have said, it does eventually move earlier naturally, think it was probably around 5/6 months-ish for me! Don't make plans for early mornings and enjoy the lie ins!

I chose early appointments thinking I’d be awake with the baby anyway Grin who knew babies liked to lie in! Thanks everyone

Mine both did this unless one of us went to bed with them at the same time (didn’t necessarily have to be asleep, we used to watch tv with headphones). Might be an option when you do have to get up earlier.
I also used to put them in a very light room near the window to nap whereas bedtime was in the dark, which seemed to help too.

RedRobin100 · 23/11/2021 04:53

Sounds normal OP. Too early for an early bedtime really.
It will creep earlier every few months.

My baby is the same. It's like a switch flips at 11.30 pm and suddenly she would happily be put down and then sleep through the night. Any earlier than that and she either won't sleep or will fall asleep and wake up 20 minutes later. Same as her naps during the day.

Unfortunately I have found over the last week that she has started fighting going to sleep even at the usual time...it was 2.15am last night before we finally got her to sleep Confused
