Am I doing bedtime right

Hi all,

I have a DS who is a month old, and I am wondering whether I am doing his bedtime right. He is a gorgeous, happy and very chilled baby, this is our first so want to make sure we are doing the best for our boy and us! Any advice is sooo welcome.

I have noticed he is having more awake time during the day, he usually has a feed early evening then naps on and off throughout the evening. We go to bed around 22:00 and take him up, change nappy, feed, burp, put in sleeping bag and then cuddle for a while before I put him into his bedside crib. Once he is settled he can sleep for anything from 2 to 4 hours, when he wakes I repeat the change, feed, burp, cuddle then down. Is this the right thing to do or should we be doing something else? He sometimes wakes after around 20-30 mins of being put in his crib, and I have to take him out, soothe him and put him back in once he's asleep, sometimes repeating this a couple of times before he's completely settled in the crib. Is this normal? My neighbour has a baby 10 days older than mine who is apparently "sleeping through the night" not to compare as I know all babies are different but this has made me question what we are doing a bit.

I just want to be a good mum and be doing everything right! Thanks all xx

Yes very normal. Some babies won't even be put down to sleep at all - mine would only sleep if touching me.

If your neighbour's baby is really sleeping through that's not typical at that age at all. Some babies do but most won't.

Thanks! With so many people I know competing over "who's baby's routine is better and who's baby sleeps better at night" I think it gives unrealistic expectations! X

Sounds very much what our baby did at this point in terms of going to bed with us around 9.30 and waking every 2-3 hours for feeding. Her first stint of sleep slowly stretched longer and now at 13 weeks she does 5-6 hours when she first goes to sleep, then feeds and sleeps for another 4/5 hours although is a bit more restless and sometimes needs resettling. She became noticeably more tired and fussy earlier in the evenings which wasn't soothed by feeding so we now put her to bed earlier between 7 and 8. We haven't really implemented any strategy as such, just followed her lead and fed on demand. She naturally seems to have settled herself into this routine. Once he stops pooing overnight you can stop changing him. Nappies are designed to last through the night, just keep an eye on his skin and make sure he isn't getting sore. It is very unusually for babies to sleep through at this stage, although not unheard of. Lucky for you friend theirs is but don't worry yours isn't - yours is the norm! I'm sure you're doing a great job :)

Don’t change overnight unless wet through or there’s a poo. Keeps them sleepier.

My 2 year old isn’t currently sleeping through the night. Bloody molars! Little babies aren’t supposed to sleep through the night, a couple do but not many. Your baby’s sleep will change many times over the next two years. If you are both happy and you’re responding to her needs then it’s all fine.
