What's happened to 5 month old's sleep?

DS2 is 5 months old. His nighttime sleep has never been great. Our current routine is about 7.30ish, I feed DS2 and settle him to sleep, then he goes in his pram when we are downstairs. I go to bed as early as possible after we have dinner, usually 9.30. My DH takes him for a shift in his Moses basket in a separate room to me. He's generally pretty settled during this time and will wake for a feed at midnight or thereabouts.

DH brings him through to me when he next wakes, usually 1.30 or 2.30. Then he goes in a Snuzpod next to the bed (no longer attached as he can roll now). He'll feed again once he wakes and tends to fall asleep at the breast.

Previously I would then be able to put him down for around an hour at a time, he would then wake to feed or be settled back to sleep. He generally didn't cry on waking but just grumbled a bit.

However for about a fortnight he wakes up almost immediately every single time I put him down and cries. Shushing, patting or otherwise trying to calm him in the cot make him more upset.

He falls asleep almost immediately when picked up. I am really concious of not waking my husband and eldest so struggle with trying pick up, put down as he will just cry harder each time he's put down.

He is exclusively breastfed so I don't know if being next to me isn't helping?

He naps well in the day and sleeps when pushed in the pram, in the sling, or held. He had a cold last week and slept 6 hours with only one wake for a feed and it was so nice to actually sleep!!

I'm lucky that my husband (who works FT) does as much as possible so I do get some sleep, but does anyone have any advice on how to get him back in his cot and settled?

You could remove 1 side off your full sized cot and make it a sidecar cot.

The key thing that will solve this issue you are having is when baby learns yo go from awake to asleep in the cot. Being put down already asleep never works as a long term strategy.

With the sidecar cot, you can cuddle baby to sleep from your bed, with baby in the cot, then extract yourself once asleep.
