What is your baby wearing under 2.5 tog sleeping bag?

5mo DS is still in his next-to-me in my room. Room temp starts at around 20-21c, reducing to 17-19c by morning. I'm still putting him in a vest and sleepsuit after his bath to keep him warm enough until bedtime, but I'm in a sleeping bag dilemma.

All the online charts I see suggest he should only wear a long sleeved vest, but I'm worried that won't be enough. I'm cold in the room despite the temperature, and I'm in bed next to him in a jumper over my pjs and a hot water bottle! His hands are cold in the night.

What are you dressing your DC under a 2.5 tog sleeping bag?

He just wears long t shirt and bottoms. I keep the heating on all night though.

LUCCCY · 01/11/2021 21:49

Long sleeve*

Mine is in a 1 tog and a long sleeved vest. Bedroom about 20 degrees. She gets all sweaty in a 2.5 tog at the minute.

8dpwoah · 01/11/2021 21:52

Newborn is in a sleep suit and 2.5 tog grosnug but I noticed her hands were a bit chilly last night now the temperature has dropped, so I've set the heating to come on for an hour or so about 1am and will see how that affects things. Better to be a little cold than too hot I think anyway.

EdithGrantham · 01/11/2021 21:54

Long sleeve sleepsuit, no vest, in a room that's probably around 18° all night. She feels warm enough and isn't waking up cold but it does seem strange that advice for day time is same as you + one layer but no adults I know would be warm enough with a 2.5 tog quilt? Maybe the it's warmer by virtue of the fact it's a sleeping bag?

My twins are in a 1-tog sleepsac, and under it they wear a long-sleeve tshirt. No trousers.
The room is about 18 degrees but drops to 16 during the night.
I'm terrified of them overheating, so keep them on the cooler side.

Luckyelephant1 · 01/11/2021 21:57

Sleepsuit and 2.5 tog sleeping bag. Our room temp varies between 18-21 degrees during the night. As it gets colder I will add the vest as well. I’ve seen the charts too and agree with you. I know hands and feet aren’t the best indicator but sometimes her hands were ice cold in the middle of the night when I followed the chart religiously, which can’t be nice.

I figure as long as we aren’t going mental with extra blankets and layers they will be fine.

Sneezymcsneezy · 01/11/2021 22:04

Exactly the same as @Luckyelephant1, will probably turn on heating to keep above 18 degrees rather than put on another layer

Although she’s just peed all over her sleeping bag during a nappy change and the others are in the dirty laundry already so I guess we’re using blankets tonight Grin

My LO likes to be cosy warm so she is in a vest, sleepsuit and 2 5 tog bag.
Even in the height of summer I had her in a short sleeve and short sleepsuit rather than a vest (but no vest underneath) and a 1 tog bag.
I think every baby sleeps best at a different temperature and you just have to work out what's best for them

donkeyhottie · 02/11/2021 15:05

Thanks all. I think you're right- I'll have to trial and error it. Like @user1471604848 I don't want him to overheat, but given that I love to hunker down under a load of layers, I do worry that he'll be cold!!

Mine is in a onesie (like a bonds wondersuit) and a 2.5 tog bag.

Ready2020 · 04/11/2021 05:55

Mine is in 1 tog bag with vest and sleepsuit. I find the bedroom too warm as OH has put the heating on. It sits between 19 and 20 now. But it seems to suit DD fine. I just kick the duvet off.

Cindercat · 13/11/2021 15:20

Long-sleeved vest and sleepsuit with 2.5 tog snuggle suit or sleeping bag. Room varies between 19-16 degrees.

AliasGrape · 13/11/2021 15:24

Our bedroom is generally pretty warm, between 19 and 20 usually. She wears a 1.5 tog sleeping bag and either a sleepsuit or pjs (she’s 15 months now so doesn’t have as many sleep suits). One night last week I added a vest but she was all sweaty in the night so I left it off the next night.

Their hands are always going to be cold - it’s their core temperature you should check, so on their chest or back of the neck.

AliasGrape · 13/11/2021 15:27

Also because she’s older I’m a bit more relaxed about her being in more layers, but at 5 months I was still terrified of overheating.

If he’s too cold he’ll let you know, too hot is much more of a worry.
