ds is 9 months, and has always slept on his back, tucked in. have tried not tucking him in so much, so he can get in different postions, but he just ends up crying on his hands and knees, and doesn't lie back down. thought that if he could get himself in any position, he may sleep better??! any thoughts?

Most babies sleep better on their tums and I'm almost sure that the official advice is that once they can roll over on their own, sleeping on their backs doesn't matter so much.

Also it may make you feel better to know that the official advice in Spain is to sleep babies on their tummies or their sides from birth - midwife in the hosp told me off for putting ds "boca arriba" (mouth upwards).

Anyway if the question was about getting him to sleep rather than worrying about position... ds (10 months) has been doing this from about 3 months. I just say night night, shut the door and let him cry for a little while. He only ever cries for a couple of mins now (was 10-20 mins initially) but unless he's absolutely knackered that appears to be the only way he'll get to sleep.

The latest message in the UK is for babies to sleep on their backs. All 3 of mine slept on their tums, as that was the advice at that time. Grandson always slept on back when small - now sleeps in really odd positions, but he's older.
