Six month old, long night waking

So my six month old, not far off seven month old has always been a great sleeper. Sleeping through from 12 weeks. We got to five months and he started waking earlier in the night for a feed. Fine. Then it's just gone downhill from there. He wakes constantly for his dummy to be put in, but is still really restless.
The past three nights he's been waking up between 12-1 and is wide awake. Completely wide awake. So he's making noises but not crying. He's next to me so it keeps me awake. I've tried putting him in bed with me, feeding him, winding him, giving him teething gel. Taking his gro bag off incase he's hot, rocking him, patting him and nothing is getting him back off to sleep. I just don't know what to do with him. Any ideas?

I should probably add that he sometimes falls asleep on the bottle, but also will go down and fall asleep by himself.

What are his daytime naps like? Maybe he’s just not tired enough to sleep all night!

wetfloor · 15/10/2021 10:40

@Matilda1981 well I've put him In his cot this week for naps and he's either had three half an hour naps, or yesterday he had two naps which totaled three hours. But it doesn't seem to make a difference what happens in the day

What are the timings of naps like? Usually a split night means something in the day is off

wetfloor · 15/10/2021 14:04

@SRK16 so he has a nap about 2.5-3 hours after waking. Then 2.5-3 hours after that nap. Sometimes he misses the third nap. Maybe he's just having too much in the day?

There's usually a couple reasons for this - have a look at recent thread split nights I think it's called. When I researched it's developmental or overtiredness or too much sleep in day. At six months having 2 naps can be a bit hard on them apparently at that age.

@Fancyties that's great thank you. I'll have a read. It just seems to have come out of nowhere??

Yep. It can do. Your lucky as I know some people experience it before this age. My LO done it since 4 months old and goes through phases. Usually for my LO it's due to overtiredness xx

wetfloor · 15/10/2021 16:12

@Fancyties it's good you know what causes it. He's had more sleep yesterday and last night was bad. Maybe it's the opposite for us

If its overtiredness it takes a few days fir lo to get caught back up. So I would give a few days before deciding. On other hand you know your lo I don't x

wetfloor · 15/10/2021 16:24

@Fancyties that's a good point. I'll see how the next few nights go.

Calorific need goes up quite significantly around this age. Remember that the easiest way to get calories into baby is milk feeds. So during early weaning don't give solids instead of milk, rather give solids on top of maintaining (Or increasing) milk intake.

If you find that solid meals are causing a reduction in milk intake, this can put baby into a calorie deficit (remembering that early weaning foods are often low calorie), so you see an increase in night waking because of overall calorie deficit.

Try to increase daytime calories.

@FATEdestiny thank you. I have been making sure we keep on top of milk feeds. There's nothing In fruit and veg is there.
Last night was better. Though he was awake for an hour and half but he was crying and really upset rather than just being awake. I fed him and he went to sleep after a while. Then he had a much better night. The long wake times seem to be getting earlier. So last night it was 1030. Guess we will have to see what tonight brings. My other child never had this.
