How to use a dummy for sleeping

Hello, we have a six week old son who was born at 37 weeks. It is very hard to get more than 3-4 hours of broken sleep at night due to him not sleeping very well unless he is being held. We are trying to introduce a dummy to help and note the lullaby trust say we need to "Offer your baby a dummy each time you put them down for a sleep, day or night".

However, when he is breastfeeding he will often fall asleep and even after winding he will be pretty much asleep. So, not really sure when to use the dummy? Should we use it after we put him in his Next2Me and then wakes up after 20mins when he realises he isn't being held?

Thanks in advance

Use it as a tool to put baby down after winding, and also to lengthen naps.

So after a feed, you'd expect a 6 week old yo be asleep. Then winding will rouse baby slightly but it's to be expected that a 6 week old will still be drowsy through this.

Once you've had a burp, putting baby down often rouses baby slightly again. If this is the case, use dummy here. It's ideal if baby is roused slightly, to be aware of being put down. But sometimes baby will be fast asleep when put down (not ideal, but frequently happens). In this case you have no need for dummy. But the first instance baby goes rouse from sleep, give dummy then to try and keep baby a sleep longer.

After a few more months baby will be much more awake anyway, it's at that point that baby is mire awake after winding, so you use dummy more.

What ive done for my baby to take a dummy is when she would finish her milk i would just put the dummy in and then she would suck on it and then i would wind her when she has the dummy in her mouth when she would have a burp i would tug the dummy a bit and she would suck even harder but that was for the night but in the days i would just offer the dummy to her when she would be awake or again after a feed so she gets used to it you can try this for a week and see if your baby would like a dummy but you have to try several dummies and see which one your baby prefers like my baby is 20 week old and she loves the dummy she wont go to sleep without it.
