My DD is awful at bedtime no matter what I do, always has been really! She sleeps through the night once she's asleep but bedtime goes on and on and on with her jumping around, crying or getting out of bed

She naps for 1.5 hours in the day and then is generally awake for 7 hours after her nap before bed time. The issue is I cant get her down for a nap early enough for this to not mean she goes to sleep at 10pm or later every single night Sad I could shorten the nap but she's definitely not ready to wake up when I do wake her. She generally sleeps from 10pm til 8am so only 10 hours per night, it's a vicious cycle

I can't cut out the nap as she falls asleep in her dinner at half 5 then wakes up at 4am

Please tell me what you do to get your 2 year old in bed and asleep before 8pm!

I’ve found it a difficult balancing act since my little girl turned 2! She’s now 2.5 and every day is slightly different. Generally I try to stick to these principles:

  • Nap no longer than 1 hour (45 mins is ideal)
  • Go on no later than 1.30pm

Usually try and do lunch at 11.30 and then nap by 12.30, but it doesn’t always work out that way! She goes to sleep about 7.30 usually . Good luck !

Reduce the length of the nap?

Mine does 45-1.15 and goes to bed at 7ish

My DS is 26 months. He naps for an hour from about 1:30-2:30 and then is usually asleep by 8 and wakes around 7-7:30. I do find if we let him sleep later than 7:30 in the morning that it messes the day up so maybe you could try an earlier start to the day? I'll also admit to getting him to sleep in the car most days to make sure his nap happens at the right time.

At bedtime we do teeth, stories, grobag, bed and turn off the lights so it's completely dark and then lie down with him until he's asleep. He has a gro blackout blind so it's dark even in the summer.

Nap straight after lunch, so around 12.15, and sleep for around 45 mins to an hour, any longer and bedtime is a nightmare. fBed at 7.30. That seems to work for us anyway!

hiredandsqueak · 13/10/2021 17:00

Dgs is up at 6, nap 12.30 to 1.30, in bed between 6 and 6.30. Can have as long as an hour and a half nap with no need for later bedtime.

shivbo2014 · 13/10/2021 17:02

Mine is 27 months goes to bed between 7 and half 7 usually. Up at about half 5 to 6am. He usually naps for about 2 hrs at around lunchtime.

My DS went from 2hrs to 1hr when he was about 2 and was still a nightmare for bed. Not quite as late at 10pm but taking over an hour to fall asleep. Sometimes his older sister was asleep before him! We gave up completely at 2yrs 2mo and he was horrible in the day for a couple of weeks, but after that he was fine. Plus in bed and asleep in 5mins. He's 3 now and still the same.

DD was 2yrs 3mo when she went from 2hrs to nothing. One day she had the usual 2hrs, the next day she sang the while time. No problems at bedtime when she was napping, but she just decided one day she wasn't going to nap anymore, and that was that!

Might be time to think about dropping the nap, or making it even shorter. It's hard, but it does usually help at bedtime.

Exactly this here too. I generally find, the longer he sleeps in the day, the better he sleeps at night. I'm not entirely sure why he keeps getting up pre-6am though. A few weeks ago I was having to wake him at 7.30 for nursery.
Moomarre · 13/10/2021 20:34

I’m not sure how many months mine is Blush but usually goes for a nap around 1 and I either wake hin up at 2.45 to do the school run or let him nap as long as he needs which can sometimes be until gone 4. Doesn’t seem to affect when he goes to bed st all (usually 7.30-8). Then he wakes between 5.30 and 6.30. What I do find is that if I can get him to bed closer to 7 (rare because of life) he usually sleeps later in the morning Confused

blackcurrantqueen · 13/10/2021 21:05

Mine was 2 in July

7 hours between nap and bedtime is probably too long and maybe making bedtime difficult if she is overtired.

Routine here is up about 6.15, nap 12.30-2ish, bedtime about 6.30/7

I would try waking her early and shifting the whole routine forward.
Babies aren't really designed to wake at 8 if that makes sense x

BrownEyedSquirrel · 13/10/2021 21:16

Mine is 2 next month and has never once slept through the night, so it could be worse OP!
Also takes him a while to settle at night, maybe 45 mins from when he is in his cot.
Currently having 2 or 3 wakes a night which is pretty good going for us.
I'd like to have your problem BlushGrin

Mine is 30 months. (2.5 years)
Gets up at 7am, get her out and about in the morning to wear her out. Maybe the park or a walk.
Then nap about 11.30-12.15 ish. Have lunch.
Bath at 7pm and lights off 7.30.
Some days she goes to nursery so her nap changes and she has it 1pm -1.45 ish. Sometimes she is still tired afterwards but if she has any longer then she doesn't go to bed until later which ruins my evening

Marvel23 · 13/10/2021 21:30

My 25 month old wakes 5.30-6.00 (as this is when my husband gets up) naps 10.00-11.30/12.00 and goes to bed 6.30-7.00. She is much easier to get to bed then my 6 year old
