When will babies naps get longer?

My baby is 4 months... turning 5 months next week.

Wondering when his laps will lengthen past the 45 min cycle?

He can self settle and resettle at night. Just he wakes from naps and won't resettle and I keep getting told they will eventually lengthen.

Yeah I was told that too. At 22 months DD now sometimes (sometimes!) does an hour, otherwise it's still 45 mins.

I realised that the stress of trying to make her sleep longer wasn't worth it, so we're just rolling with it. I would love 2hs break in the day that most of my mum friends seem to have, but it's just not the way she's programmed!

Sorry if that's not what you want to hear, but for me it was the right thing to do to just stop worrying about it.

My baby is 7 months and still has 35/40 min naps unless she is laid on me. I think that's just her but I'm jealous of all the babies that have 2 hour naps 😂

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 13/10/2021 12:47

about 7 months I think we got into a better more consistent 1-2.5hr naps

jupitermars1345 · 13/10/2021 12:56

Yeah my 4 month old is doing 30-40 minute naps but sleeps 6-6 solid.

It never did get better with my first sorry. She would self settle but always wake after 30 mins. It's hard 😬 but I have heard a lot of babies do get the hang of longer naps .
I'm trying not to hold out for it though this time and if it happens then great 🤣

jupitermars1345 · 13/10/2021 12:57

She still has short naps even layed on me or in the sling 😴

Lgw20 · 13/10/2021 13:30

I won't get my hopes up then haha!!

Saying that... today he's just literally done two hours.... I'll take these days when I can!

We have this too. Always 45mins max, but in the past few weeks it's likely 30mins. Literally never longer!

I have tried so much to extend his naps and often go up and rock or try to resettle but it's bloody stressful and I feel like I'm always clock watching during nap time!

He's 19wks.

I think with my first he was also a catnapper at this age too but I didn't notice it as much because we were always out and about (and I also knew no better or different as he was my first!). By about 7-8montjs he definitely napped for a longer nap after lunch though so I guess maybe it just happened!?! I think a full lunch or solids might have helped.... neither of mine like milk much!

hotmeatymilk · 13/10/2021 16:11

Mine did 20 mins tops til around 9-10m, if I recall. Once down to 2-3 naps, they lengthened. Got really long once at nursery and longer once at one nap; had about a fortnight’s peace and quiet before we had to start cutting the nap short to make sure she went to bed on time. Fucking naps!!! Wine

Timeforwinterclothes · 13/10/2021 16:12

My two eldest barely slept in the day at all. Both stopped naps at 12 months. My third napped for two hours until she was three. I don't think anyone can answer your question as all children differ.

jupitermars1345 · 13/10/2021 16:13

Fucking naps

It was such a weight of my shoulders when my first didn't need them anymore 😃

CareerConcerns1999 · 13/10/2021 16:13

I used to "manufacture" longer sleep. At about 35-40mins after they fell asleep I'd rock them or move them around a bit in whatever they were sleeping in - it (99% of the time), stirred them enough to go back into a new 45min cycle.

At some point (after 6m) I stopped needing to do this

Timeturnerplease · 13/10/2021 20:17

Never, in our case. Was still doing 28 minutes until she dropped her last nap between 18 and 20 months. Was able to self settle at bedtime and resettle during the night.

Once she could speak, she started refusing even the 28 minutes - ‘No sleep. Not nighttime’.

Sadly some kids just don’t like napping 🤦🏻‍♀️

@jupitermars1345 Yes, I’m glad I wasn’t the only one that felt like this! A 28 minute stretch of peace was not worth 20 minutes of rocking a screaming baby/toddler in a buggy to force sleep.

DD1’s disposition improved immensely once we no longer had that daily battle. Nursery/grandparents were relieved to give up the fight too 😂

Helporhindrance07 · 13/10/2021 20:29

Mine used to do the 28 minute nap thing then at 7 months it magically changed and suddenly lengthened to 1-2 hours! I didn’t do anything different just one day it changed. I used to be frantic before then trying to lengthen the nap, DC2 is only a few weeks old and I’m going to try and not let myself get so worked up this time!

Fancyties · 13/10/2021 20:30

@careerconcerns1999 - as this person did. From 5 months old. Once they started stirring I would either tap dummy lightly. Or simply pop hand firmly on lo chest to increase likely hood to go into next cycle.

From about 6 months I decreased it and now generally I just let her sleep for how long she needs/wants. Sometimes 45 mins/1houf sometimes 1.5 hours 🤷‍♀️ occasionally a 2.15mins x

jupitermars1345 · 13/10/2021 20:35

I always tried to resettle but she wouldn't have it 🤦‍♀️
She even self settled for naps but just wouldn't bloody nap well.
