4 month sleep regression, when does it end!

We are deffo going through the 4 month regression.

Little one could resettle quite easily before with his dummy, he could do the two hour lunch nap and also connected his sleep cycles.

Now he's doing 30-45 min cat naps, is harder to settle, he's found his thumb so keeps pulling dummy out although his thumb doesn't always sooth him the same way the dummy is. Nights are hit and miss too.

When does this phase pass, I keep encouraging him to self settle and give him the space he needs but please someone tell me it gets better!!?

It gets better!

Sounds like you're doing all the right things. Basically if they relied on something to get them to sleep before (rocking/dummy/patting etc) then when they hit the regression they often need that at the end of each cycle.

By practising letting him settle without that prop you will help him come through.

Brew and sympathy, it's tough but it doesn't last forever

SGChome20 · 23/09/2021 19:35

How long has it been? For my DD it lasted about a month at nightime which I thought was ok actually. Unfortunately naps were another matter. She’s settled down now and naps really well but she’s now 9 months (sorry if that’s really bad news!) I basically just accepted that she needed cuddles for sleep in the day and because she was pretty good at night just went with it.

My amazing sleeper has forgotten how to sleep at night (never been much of a day napper) and I'm shattered, it's like having a newborn again. Sending solidarity!

Cross posted, a month!? You're a more patient person than me! Did anything help them through it @SGChome20? Don't know if I'm meant to be doing something or just ploughing on

@thaimoon Yeah I'm trying to help him self settle more.

Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't but hopefully it will pass soon!

@Lgw20 that's really normal, it takes time to perfect a new skill Smile

Lasted 5 weeks here... This regression has been so hard... Now my previously wonderful sleeper is still fighting daytime naps but at least we are getting one long stretch at night (and then 2-3 wakes). Solidarity!

Pickle2021 · 23/09/2021 20:10

Lasted about a month maybe more. I forgotten tbh 😂 I got some advice on here of putting lo in cot every time awake and settling baby in there. Firm hand on chest tapping dummy just keep doing. Then gradual decrease.

Also to lengthen naps every single nap I would try to lengthen whether that's a bouncer pram etc just keep rocking when coming too end of cycle.

I think most lo go through it, she had 4 or 5 45 minutes naps a day for a while. Wake times 1.5 hours max.

2 nights of waking every hour or two then about month of waking (needing to be resettled) once or twice a night. Naps have been worse (and still a bit hit and miss at 6 months) but I'm grumpier at night so I was stricter resettling him than during the day Grin. He actually started sleeping through again when I moved him into his own room (a little earlier than recommended.. ) so we weren't disturbing each other. He does whimper/ groan etc now and then, sometimes the odd cry, but goes back to sleep unaided quite happily.

We’re still in a version of it at nearly 9 months!
