Did you dream feed?

DD is now 3 months and sleeps 8.30-4.30. She then has a bottle, change and is back to sleep until 7.30ish.

I thought this was brilliant! Until a family 'friend' commented.

Apparently she should now be sleeping 12 hours at night and I should do a dream feed.

I vaguely remember doing this with DD1 (now a teen), however I'm usually asleep by 9.30/10pm 😂.

DH did it once, but she only took 2 oz and still woke at 4!

Anyway did anyone bother with a 'dream feed'?

I'm also aware family friend is a bit of a knob, that's a whole other thread 😂

I did do the dream feed so lift at 10-11pm (when you go to bed) and plug bottle in. For us it did result in them sleeping through from around 3-4 months old. However, it doesn’t work with every baby and I don’t think any sleep routine is a given before the developmental changes to their sleep cycles at 4 months old. Do what works for you and ignore any unsolicited advice is the no.1 rule of parenting. So if you’re happy with the way things are then definitely feel free to ignore family friend who sounds like a bit of a knob tbh.

My 3 month old doesn't sleep through the night? He sleeps in blocks of 1.5-4 hours

I don't dream feed

Do you bottle or BF?

WashableVelvet · 21/09/2021 07:49

There’s no ‘should’ about it! But if you fancy trying a dream feed, no harm in doing it at 10 before your bedtime (rather than staying up), I’d give it 4-5 days before deciding whether it does or doesn’t work. We love the dream feed, still doing it at 6m.

I did. Last BF at 10pm. They all slept through then til 7am.
Though this messed up at 4 months were they all decided to wake up every hour! Once this was sorted they no longer needed a dream feed.

Thank you for all your replies!!

DD is bottle fed, I may give it a go for a few days. Is it normal for them just to take a few oz? Also did you change them?

Not looking forward to the 4 month sleep regression I must admit 😂😂

A true dream feed is lifting them without waking them, so no changing, mine would always take a full feed. There is the Gina Ford school of thought where you wake them up properly at 10/11pm to get them to take a full feed but IMO that wouldn’t be considered a dream feed.

I didn't initially do dream feed. Did it from 5 months old which stopped the 1am feed. We have recently just dropped as was disturbing her more then helping x
I think what you have sleep wise is really good tbh.

CorpusCallosum · 21/09/2021 09:22

A 3 month old sleeping through 12 hours 🤣🤣🤣

Dream feeds for us were a waste of time, DD hardly had anything, still woke twice more till night-weaned at 7 months. Sounds like what you're doing is working really well for you. Smile, nod and carry on!

Both of my babies were similar at 3 months and I considered this to be sleeping through Confused

My thinking was I was always happy with how well my DC slept at night (and how much sleep I got as a result). So I never messed around with it for fear of ruining it. Grin.

I wouldn't listen to your "friend" and just carry on as you are. If it isn't broke, don't fix it. I also would take the "Wait for the four month sleep regression" posters on here with a pinch of salt. Neither of mine went through any sleep disruption at 4 months, if anything that's when they started going longer.
