Baby arching back and wanting to be held to sleep

HELP!

My 8mo used to be able to go to sleep by their self or when they fell asleep could go in their bed with no problem.

Now day and night he constantly wants to be held. As soon as you attempt to put him down he is arching his back and going rigid to avoid being put down and cries. He has a mega grip so I can't gently move him. This happens when awake too.

How can I stop this. I've spent hours last night trying to put him down. Tonight we thought we would try controlled crying. As soon as I go in there to soothe him he's clamped on to me.

I’d like to offer some useful advice, but I’ve been trying to get my 15month old back into the cot for the last hour with no success, so I not sure that I’m suitably qualified. I’m afraid all I can offer is some sympathy, from one tired parent to the next xx

Reflux? The arching back sounds like it could be, but at 8m seems unlikely?

Isn't 8 months a major leap? Do you use Wonder Weeks?

fitzbilly · 18/09/2021 03:48

Reflux or dairy milk allergy?

My ds did the arching back thing and it turned out to be terrible silent reflux brought on by cow milk protein.

I thought it was that age you got the 2 C’s cranky crying and clingy. And that’s because they realise you leave them and in theory can result in separation anxiety. How long has it been going on?

Newmum29 · 18/09/2021 04:15

That is a leap: 34-36 weeks. Hopefully should resolve itself in a few weeks.

Vicky1989x · 18/09/2021 08:19

Sounds like separation anxiety - my DD went through it at around 8 months. It lasted a few weeks.

greenette · 19/09/2021 01:35

Do we just have to ride it out then? I've got wonderweeks but I didn't think much of it and I read that it wasn't true

Yes from what I have read it's a normal developmental period and another step towards your infant becoming a child not a baby, with more abilities. Zero to Three is a useful resource to read up about neurological development and how it impacts on sleep and other baby behaviours and what you can do to support your little one through it.

Do you add rice powder to his purées to thicken them? My DS suffered terribly, and his immature digestive system couldn't cope with the rice passing through and swelling up as it passed. He grew out of it, but we eliminated rice from his diet until he was about 2.

(Did a lot of back arching)

He is baby led and eats what we eat basically. The back arching is more a sign of defiance and tantrum then tummy problems.

Brilliant, thank you for the recommendation.

Is there any chance he could have earache?

dontblamemee · 30/09/2021 13:06

I can confirm my 9 month old is the same. I have biceps now from lugging him around everywhere 😩
