Daytime naps

Hi all

After some shared experiences/ advice please

My 13 week old fights sleep in the day, gets overtired and very upset! I have found he needs five hours to be a happy little boy! One hour early morning, two hours late morning and two hours late afternoon. The only way to get him to sleep for this long in the day is to let him sleep on me. If I put him down in his cot he will sleep for half hour and wake himself up crying.

At night he has been great and goes down at 8 a bit drowsy after a feed and will send himself off with the sleep aids/ routine mentioned below. He gets 9-10 hours a night with a feed/ change inbetween. So I know he can sleep for longer on his own and in his cot!

Normal sleep aids I use are dark room, bedside cot, white noise, dummy to suckle, rockit zed. I also feed just before naps like at night.

I have tried to persevere this week with resettling and putting back down when he wakes in the day after half hour, but he won’t go back off and we get into an overtired cycle of upset!

Thank you

Not unusual - sometimes good night sleepers are crap nappers and vice versa- either let him sleep on u and enjoy that time (box set etc!)- or u could put them to sleep on their belly in the day

@OnlyFoolsnMothers thank you

What makes you say about sleeping on belly?

It’s just interesting you say that because in the day he wants to sleep on his side or on his tummy on me! I don’t notice that at night, he goes straight on his back. Is it a comfort/ warmth thing?

Baby’s tend to prefer to sleep on their belly’s, although it’s against safety guidelines. I myself have resorted to putting my daughters on their tummy’s to sleep for naps, as long as I was awake to observe the baby I felt it was fine.

My 14w/o will only sleep on me in the day. If I try to put him down, his eyes snap open and he won't go back to sleep. I figure he needs the nap, so I just enjoy the cuddles. He still pretty much does the "feed, play, nap" pattern, and has a short nap of about 30-60 mins about 5 times a day. He's also pretty good at night and will pretty much go through.

I would like to be able to put him down for a nap in the day just so I can get some stuff done! I'm hoping it'll naturally change as he gets bigger.

I will also say it feels endless at the time but honestly they develop and nap independently in the blink of an eye

Half an hour naps mean 1h wake windows between naps. Try this for a return of your Happy Little Boy:

5.30am wake
6.30-7.00am nap (cumulative total = 0.5h)
8.00-8.30am nap (cumulative total = 1h)
9.30-10.00am nap (cumulative total = 1.5h)
11.00-11.30am nap (cumulative total = 2h)
12.30-1.00pm nap (cumulative total = 2.5h)
2.00-2.30pm nap (cumulative total = 3h)
3.30-4.00pm nap (cumulative total = 3.5h)
5.00-5.30pm nap (cumulative total = 4h)
6.30-7.00pm nap (cumulative total = 4.5h)
8.00pm Bedtime (9.5h overnight)
