How much sleep does your five-year-old get?

DS1 goes to bed at 8 and gets up at 6. That makes 10 hours' sleep a night.
But I don't think he's getting enough sleep as he's often very tired in the day, even just after getting up, and he's often very miserable and weepy.
He shares a bedroom with DS2, who gets the same amount of sleep and is fine. It's usually DS1 who wakes DS2 in the morning.
I've tried putting him to bed earlier - he just gets up earlier - and we've got blackout curtains so i don't know what to try.

bed at 8 up at 7.30 in the week - 8.30 -9.00 at weekends.

DD sleeps for about 11 hours a night. If she goes to bed late, she gets up late. Sometimes it may be a little less, sometimes up to 12 hours.

ChasingSquirrels · 02/12/2007 20:23

bed at 7.30pm (8/8.30 on fri & sat nights), up around 7am.
Until recently it was 8pm and he often didn't go to sleep until 9pm. School tiredness has finally kicked in so am getting him into bed a bit earlier and he is usually asleep by 8pm.

LyraSilvertongue · 02/12/2007 20:23

I wish he would fairydust but he's always up at 6, even if he's still tired.
If I put him to bed at 7 he'd be up at 5, complaining of still being tired.

Roughly 11 hours a night. I always put her to bed by 8pm at the latest but she never goes to sleep before 9. I usually wake her up at 7.50am on a school morning. Sometimes, at the weekend, she does the full 12.

LyraSilvertongue · 02/12/2007 20:24

So, so far everyone's DC are getting more sleep than mine...

what happens when he gets up? If mine got up at 6 I would send him back to bed. Could you try that?

LyraSilvertongue · 02/12/2007 21:04

They troop into our bedroom and DP gets up with them and they go and play. He's knackered too.

ah, missed the waking ds2 bit. That makes it harder.

LyraSilvertongue · 02/12/2007 21:58

Maybe the room sharing isn't helping but we don't have any choice at the moment.

my dd is 5 1/2 and needs 12 hours sleep she goes bed at 7pm and wakes up just after 7am if she goes to bed later she cant get up for school

LadyMuck · 10/12/2007 10:13

11 hours a night for my 4yo and 6yo.

ChristmasseyHarrisey · 10/12/2007 18:49

My almost-6 ds goes to bed at 7.30 and gets up at 7.15 through the week (when I drag him out of bed so he will be in time for the bus!).

Weekends its closer to 8 going to bed and 8.30-9 getting up. He would easily sleep 12 hours a night every night, and I darent let him have much less (never goes out late on school nights etc) as he is awful if he doesnt get enough.

We dont have blackouts and live by a train line - I suspect a major cometary impact wouldnt wake him much before he was ready!

foxcubinapeartree · 10/12/2007 18:59

DD aged 4 gets about 11 hours and I don't think its enough. I think they need about 12 TBH this time of year (cold, dark, busy, end of term etc)

ggirlsbells · 10/12/2007 19:17

ds 5 gets about 11.5 hrs
He goes up at 7:30 and is usually asleep by 8.
wakes at 7:30

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 10/12/2007 19:23

3, 4 & 6yo's in bed by 7pm or 7.30 and they are awake anytime from 5.30am - 7am.

The 3yo has mostly dropped her afternoon nap and is OK until near-dinner time. The 4yo is part-time reception and needs more sleep (I force him to have afternoon nap once or twice a week, he argues & cries but is asleep within 5 mins so I am right!). The 6yo is fine.

Lyra - how old are your boys? Does your DS1 get a quiet hour between end of school and dinner? If you can't make him sleep more, perhaps just try for more relaxation time?

PirateInaPeartree · 10/12/2007 19:27

my dd never gets to sleep until about 8.30-9.30. If I put her to bed any earlier, she just chats and sings.

She has been looking tired the past few weeks. Maybe this term esp had wornthem out, and its harder for them to switch off after their long day??

My dd wakes at 6.30-7.

My dd has bags under her eyes, and tbh, could prob do with the xmas break!!

My child has always bee a terrible sleeper, tho has yours?

scanner · 10/12/2007 19:32

In bed at 7.30 - oops that reminds me
Up at 7.30am

marymoocow · 10/12/2007 20:41

In bed usually by 6:30pm, and up about 12 hours later.
Yesterday he went to bed at 4:30pm (well fell asleep in the car on the way home), and didn't wake until 6:45am . That was after falling asleep during the sermon at church and having 3/4 hour then as well.
Think school has finally worn him out too
