Toddler struggling with bedtime

Hi,
My LB is 28 months old and until a few weeks ago we were able to put him down awake at nap time and bedtime and he would settle himself to sleep quite quickly. In the last month, he has begun screaming as soon as we go to leave the room and myself and my husband are taking it in turns to sleep on his floor as this is the only way he’ll sleep.
Has anyone been through this or can give me any suggestions as to what we could do. I tried saying I’ll be back in a minute and that worked for 2 nights but now I can’t leave the room without him screaming!! He still needs a nap so I can't take that away.
Thank you xx

Our son is a very similar age to yours and we are having EXACTLY the same issue. Up until last Saturday he could be put down awake at nap and bedtime and he would happily say night night and sleep all night/self-settle if he woke. Now he screams bloody murder if we try and leave or if he wakes in the night.

I know there's a regression around this age so I am hoping that it will pass as soon as it appeared.

Can he sleep in your bed for a bit? Saves you having to sleep on the floor. Doesn’t mean he’ll be in there forever, DD went through this phase. I think it was teeth/ when she was coming down with colds etc. and changes like when we moved house. She sleeps in her own bed fine now but just needed some extra cuddles/ reassurance for a bit.

We've always laid with my soon to be three-year-old until he falls asleep, it's one of the things I enjoy most in the day. Smile

Could you try the gradual retreat method?
