Doing all the “right” things but still terrible sleep

Hi,
Hoping for some reassurance, or maybe some help on something I’m missing/getting wrong with babies sleep!
Baby is 4.5m old, and we are doing all the right things (I think!) in regards to sleep, but still he is waking up every 1 or 2 hours. I thought this was the 4m sleep regression, but it’s been going on for 6 weeks now.
He takes 3 or 4 naps during the day, almost all in his cot. We use white noise and a comforter to help him drift off to sleep which he does himself (sometimes takes 30 mins or so). We have worked hard to develop his independent sleep skills! If he wakes in the night we don’t pick up, will just ssh back to sleep or give him the comforter if it’s lost in cot.
Is there something I’m missing? Or maybe it just takes time and we have to ride this out?!
Thanks

Are you feeding him at night? Most babies this age still need 1-2 feeds in the night. He's hungry.

Skyla01 · 04/08/2021 18:45

Following. My LO is 6 months old and similar numerous wakings every night. Can't promise we're doing everything right but we're trying hard!

Boshmama · 04/08/2021 18:46

Pick him up and cuddle/feed him! Indepedant sleep at 4 months old is insanity

ADHC · 04/08/2021 18:56

Yes, feeding 2 or 3 times during the night. I try to not feed at every wake, but do worry that he might be hungry.

We went through this with dd waking every two hours once she hit 4 months. It lasted until she was 6 months and then pretty much over night it got much much better. Still not perfect, but manageable. At the time I thought it would never end and was exhausted and driving myself crazy trying to fix the issue. I'd give it another month, sleep changes so dramatically and constantly at this age. You just have to keep repeating to yourself that it's just a phase, and find things and treats for yourself that make a testing phase easier. Good luck, I know it can be soul destroying xx

ADHC · 04/08/2021 19:43

Thank you! Yes I keep trying to tell myself it’s just a phase, but it doesn’t make it any easier when you are awake all hours of the night hehe

You are doing all the right things, keep on doing them. It will get better, hang in there.

Sorry to tell you but my little boy did this until he was 18m old! Some children are just bad sleepers. I have a friend whose 4 year old has never slept through the night. If you accept it, it gets a bit easier.

You're doing all the right things.

Depending on the length of day time naps, baby could be over tired. An over tired baby has more of a tendency to wake fully in the light sleep phase, so you get frequent night wake ups.

Instead of working on the basis of number of naps per day, better to work on Wake Windows and let them decide how many naps happen. It's not unreasonable to have 5 or 6 short naps on bad days.

ADHC · 05/08/2021 09:58

@FATEdestinythank you for the reassurance! Yes I do worry about overtiredness. Some naps are only 30-45 mins ( which usually means it’s going to be a 4 nap day), but sometimes the naps will be 1.5 hours. We do go by wake windows - not necessarily timed, but by baby’s signals. Wake windows can be anywhere between 1.5 and 2.5 hours.
