Night time dummy duty!

Lilo08 · 24/07/2021 12:19

My nearly 6 months old is pretty chilled except for when it comes to night time and the dummy

At first he would only take it in the day when he needed it which was not very often. At night I could put him into his crib without the dummy and he would fall asleep and sleep through without the dummy. Then came along the 4 month sleep regression and gave him the dummy to help settle at night. Now I am finding he cannot fall asleep without it and finally when he does fall asleep he constantly wakes up looking for it. He only feeds once in the night but wake up almost every hour and it’s draining me

Is there a way I can wean him off the dummy for night time use or am I going to have to go cold turkey?
How do I do this? Please help!

Cold turkey.
He will learn to pop it back in himself. I got the glow in the dark ones.

Thank you. I have tried cold turkey but he just cries non stop and as soon as the dummy goes in he knocks out instantly. I have tried giving him other items as comfort but hasn’t taken to those.

He also has the glow in the dark ones

The dummy is supposed to fall out.

When baby goes into a deep sleep, all muscles go slack including the jaw, so dummy drops. Should take less than 10 mins from going to sleep to be in a deep sleep.

If baby is subsequently waking soon afterwards, that's not the dummy. All the dummy does is get baby to sleep quickly and easily. If baby is not managing to stay in the deep sleep or wakes in a light sleep, you need to get to the route cause of that issue. It isn't the dummy. The dummy serves no purpose past the first 10 mins of sleep.

Use the dumny consistently for all sleeps, for best results.

Take your focus away from the dummy to find the main issue. It is most likely to be a routine problem, a daytime sleep issue, the settling method or not enough sleep in total over 24/48h.

That’s a good point! Haven’t thought about it from that angle.

The only thing that I can think of for now that may affect his night sleep are his naps. He sleeps 1-2 hours (more if out and about) 3 times during the day. Other than that he has a pretty good routine and feeds well

This is quite a temporary problem as soon he will be able to find his dummy and replace it himself. For now get a few in the cot with him and a few glow in the dark ones.

I let my DS keep his until nearly 3 when we did the dummy fairy.

Honestly, if it works to get him to sleep don't stress about it yet.

They are good naps for a 6 month old. You are doing well, I really wouldn't get rid of the dummy because all that will go tits up.

Maybe try to routine the naps more?

So a good approximation for day time naps is the 234 / 2322 approach. So:

  • Wake in morning
  • 2h awake time
  • morning nap (cap at 2h)
  • 3h awake time
  • afternoon nap

And then either:
(A)
If total sleep is now >3h

  • 4h awake time
  • Bedtime
(B) If total sleep is now

Thank you @FATEdestiny we are sort of doing this but will need to tweak it a little

I will keep the dummy as it’s his little comfort when going to sleep and I felt so bad when I briefly took it away. He is such a good baby and always happy so I suppose I shouldn’t really complain Smile

We used to pop a few glow in the dark ones around the top of his cot so he could find one easily, if he's at an age where this would work?
