Room far too hot

... As is our whole house... As is the whole country I suspect.

Our DCs room is reading 29° with window open, fan on, at midnight. That's after trying to keep it cool all day with blind down etc. The room is south facing so gets the heat. But wondering if anyone has tips on helping a toddler sleep through this heatwave. She's usually a great sleeper however for the past week has been tossing and turning, a nightmare to get down to sleep, waking up a lot more / earlier (.. And therefore been grumpy during the hot day..)

She goes to bed in nothing but a vest with a small blanket, duvet at her feet incase by some miracle she feels too cold. By most mornings she's a sweaty, grumpy, tired mess.

My other DC isn't fairing that much better in their/our room either but is young enough to still be taking naps during the day so is generally coping a lot better.

Any tips on cooling a room, and keeping it cool?

There's no use having the window open with a fan on. All the cool air generated by the fan is escaping out the window. Best to close the window and put a bowl of ice infront of the fan to make the air blow colder.

The temperature is dropping by quite a bit on Saturday in my area. Hopefully it's the same where you are and your LO won't have to suffer much longer.

I put DD's vest in a bag I'm the fridge so it nice and cool come bed time. I also load her up with cream which cools her skin down and keep it fairly cool with the fan on. Is there any part of the day the sun doesn't shine into her room? I always fling open the cylinder and curtains in the morning to let the cool morning air seep in and then close them again come lunchtime before the sun hits her window again. I'm looking into plug in air con units though!

Cylinder is meant to be blinds!

Wipe down with a damp flannel too

After a similar thread last week I bought a number of colling gel pads that are marketed for pets (who have to cope with the heat while wearing fur) but work for humans too. Typically about £7 for a little one to £25 for a large one. The packaging says they don't need refrigeration and you do get a small cooling effect if unrefrigerated but it's even more effective if you pop them into the fridge for a couple of hours before bed time. Do you have one of the big warehouse-style mega pet-supply shops near you like eg Pets At Home? That would be a good place to look for one if you want it today.

A fan doesn't generate cold, it just moves air around which.helps sweat evaporate so we can cool down. so keep those windows open. Unless you have an air con unit which.is pumping the heat out if a tube. It's impossible to generate cold, it's a lack of heat. We have resorted to driving our child to sleep in this heat.

During the hottest part of the day, keep blinds and windows closed on the sunny side of the house. Only open the windows on the shady side. I then keep all windows closed between 12 and 3 as the outside air is so hot I don't want it in the house. Throw open windows and doors early morning and in the evening to cool the house down. Open the loft hatch. If you use a fan, remember it is also a heat generator! It only moves air, it is not aircon. I use fans in the evening next to an open window to maximise the draught of cooler air through the house. Evaporative cooling helps as well - I am actually hosing the shady side of the house in the evening to cool it off and it has a very strong effect. Hanging wet towels also works.
I have also put silver foil on our sunniest windows. I am a bit extreme though and admittedly most of my neighbours think I am a nutter.
Don't run dishwasher, oven, washing machine etc during the day. If you do, keep kitchen door closed so the heat doesn't just travel upstairs. Use extractor fans to help remove hotter air by the ceiling.

I'm in the same boat. We had a better night's sleep last night after I kept DS window and curtains closed all day yesterday, wasn't as warm in his room as it has been.

LouLou198 · 22/07/2021 07:01

I've saw a tip this morning about filling a hot water bottle with ice and cold water. I might try this myself tonight, last night seemed the hottest yet were we are and I have hardly slept.

OnNaturesCourse · 22/07/2021 08:51

Yes, we are all up and grouchy this morning as it was so sticky warm last night.

I'm in the same boat with looking at little air con units but unfortunately they are all sold out around me, and if I get one delivered it will probably arrived once the rain does lol.

Her room gets the sun all day, sunrise to sunset. If I keep the blinds down all day I've seen the paint on her sill start blistering before.

I reduced room temperature by closing windows, if it's warmer outside than it is in there's no point letting warmer air into your home
