Why is my baby doing this?

Hi all,

Hope everyone is well and coping with this hot weather!

My baby is 5 weeks on Tuesday (where the hell did that time go) and he's been doing this thing recently were his eyes are shut as if he's asleep but he's making lots of noise (a bit like a goat really) and is moving A LOT in his sleep so much so I think he's woken up but he's not if that's makes sense.

Has anyone else experienced this? And if so what is it. Is he just dreaming? Is he uncomfortable? Or is it just something newborns do?

Any advice would be fab!

Thanks in advance!

They are grunty little articles but maybe wind?

jessieb90 · 18/07/2021 22:22

I thought this too but when I pick him up to try and wind him nothing comes up and he settles again in my arms. Put him down and after a while starts you with the grunting and movement again. It's not constant but he goes through little bursts!

Thanks so much for your comment x

Mines 3 weeks old and doing similar. I think he’s a bit constipated in the hot weather and this is his way of try to get things moving. Could be wrong but surely they’ll cry if in pain or in distress?

bananaleaf2706 · 18/07/2021 22:33

Look up 'grunting baby syndrome'... it's a thing. Annoying as it is it's nothing to worry about and should get better on its own as he gets bigger.

jessieb90 · 19/07/2021 00:04

@16lily yes! You'd think they would cry if they are in pain so hopefully they're not.

@bananaleaf2706 I've just looked it up. Thank you - could explain the grunting and unsettled behaviour x

Oh I remember this so well. It was like sleeping with an animal! I found it got better around the 12 week mark.

jessieb90 · 21/07/2021 05:37

@Vicky1989x thank you. I've had the worst night with him and the weather isn't helping.

When they are doing the grunting/ moving, I'm assuming it's best to leave them and try to ignore it? It's just sometimes it looks like he's cueing for food but when I put the bottle to his mouth he doesn't want it. X

Oh gosh yes, this brought back memories. I called my gp and told her my baby sounded like an angry goat! It would be worst in the early hours, I think it’s their digestive systems getting fired up. It’s really hard but like someone else said it got better around 12 weeks I think xx

Babies are incredibly noisy, even when asleep. It’s completely normal.

jessieb90 · 25/07/2021 06:08

Thank you @Poppy709 and @Immaculatemisconception - I had a rough night of it last night. He was very loud and unsettled even though he was asleep! I did notice this morning his poo was a bit more clay like and I'm not sure whether he's slightly constipated?

This is totally normal. If he's not crying and still asleep, just let him be.

shouldistop · 25/07/2021 18:06

Newborns are such noisy sleepers. With both of mine it was like having a train in the room overnight. It gets better around 3 months I think, then the 4 month sleep regression kicks in Sad

Thanks @Aquamarine1029 and @shouldistop x
