9 month old started crying when put in cot

My 9 month old would go in his cot fine, dad would sing to him and he would fall asleep in the cot but the last few nights he’s started crying when he is put in his cot. Has anyone any ideas?

He wakes around 7am, naps 9:30am for anywhere between 1 hour - 2 hours then a nap from 2:45pm lasting either 30 mins or 45 mins. Latest waking at 3:30pm for bedtime at 7pm.

Thanks in advance

He's over tired come bedtime.

I'd suggest an earlier and longer afternoon nap. For example

7am wake
9am - 10.30
1.30pm - 3pm
7pm bed

I think for a 9 month old the awake windows should be 2.5 hours + 3 hours + 3.5 hours.
So your schedule would be something like this
7am wake
9.30-11am nap
2-3pm nap
6.30pm bed

Does he wake in the night?

Thanks @FATEdestiny. He never seems to do a long afternoon nap, always in the morning. He would just do a 30 minute nap if I cut the morning one short. And when we tried to put him down at 9am he would cry, it seems a bit too early for him.

I wouldn't cut the morning nap short. Let him sleep as long as he needs for both naps.

Do you wake him up from the afternoon nap?

Liv316 · 12/07/2021 19:49

@NameChange30 yes has always woken up overnight. We’d struggle for a 6:30pm bedtime with him starting nursery soon.

Does he have his naps in his cot too? Is he still going down okay for those? 9/10 months is peak time for separation anxiety I believe. Could it be that?

@FATEdestiny yes we tried leaving him till 4pm but then he’s not tired enough for bedtime at 7pm

@MrsL2016 yes went down fine for his morning one this morning and had 2 hours. Has been very needy with me today so that’s a possibility, I did wonder that

This doesn't make sense.
Just let him nap until 4pm then put him to bed at 7.30pm?

NameChange30 · 12/07/2021 20:11

Anyway, I think the main problem is your second awake window (between the first and second naps) - it's too long. If his first nap is 9.30-10.30 and you're not putting him down for a second nap until 2.45pm, he's awake for 4h15, which is way too long. It should be 3 hours.

So you are waking him up?

Let him sleep. Then make bedtime later.

Ideal nap schedule (if baby is waking in the night still) is

7am wake up if still asleep
9am nap - wake at 11am if not already awake
2pm nap - wake at 4pm if not already awake
Bedtime 8pm-8.30pm
