ds sleeps for around 11 hours per night, usually waking at around 7am. he is ready for a nap around 3hrs later. If we are in the car/buggy he will nod off quite happily but if we are at home it is more of a problem. He doesn't yell and scream but can take ages to nod off. I like him to wake by 11am otherwise there is not time for a 2nd nap. he needs his 2nd nap as he cannot make it through until bedtime on just one morning nap. My dilemma is do I drop to one nap after lunch? he does fall asleep quite easily if we are on the go and does eventually nod off in his cot but the nap is getting shorter and shorter because I wake him at 11am regardless. Is it still worth letting him grab 30 - 45mins in the morning just to see him through or what? I have the school run to consider too so it all gets rather muddled! Help from mnetters please!

ds is almost 14 months and has been having 1 nap on and off for a few weeks. I try to get him past the tired stage around 10am by giving him a snack and drink as if he falls asleep I would have to wake him to go and get his sister from nursery at 11.30am. If he does nap in the morning he doesnt want to nap again till 3/4pm and that means he is sleeping too late in the afternoon. Sometimes if I walk to get his sister from nursery he will nap in the buggy but that only happens on days it isnt raining/snowing, etc.

I try to get him to last till 12.30ish - that gives time to get home from nursery and for him to have some lunch - If he falls asleep in the buggy he has to have lunch after he wakes and that can be as late as 2pm sometimes. I just play it by ear and lunchtime can vary from day to day but the kids dont seem to mind.

Seona - ta for response. I have the same kind of dilemma though I have not taken teh plunge yet. His morning nap has tu be cut short otherwise he cannot fit in an afternoon one. he goes to bed at 8pm so aas long as he wakes by 4pm then he is ok. prob is that he needs to sleep by 2:30pm otherwise he cannot fit a long enough nap in before i have to wake him for hte school run! it is all so complicated. i love hte breating space of two naps but it will be so much less complicated when he goes to one!

Cruisemum - my dd is enarly 15 months and has wither one or two naps. at nursery(weekdays) she sleeps for about 20 mins in the morning (10ish) and about half an hour at 3.30 ish. at the weekends. she only has one nap if about an hour at about 11.30. she sleeps from 6.30 pm for about 12-12 1/2 hours.
i find at the weekends, with just the one longer nap, she is on better form in the afternoon and at bath / bed time than when she naps twice. if she sleeps longer, it does affect her night time sleep - she has only been sleeping through for 2 weeks (oh, and we cop out by taking her out in the car so she sleeps!)though so maybe its just pot luck!
not sure that helps but...good luck!!

cruisemum1 · 26/11/2007 14:05

thanks olivio - so if you drop to one nap do you make bedtime earlier. I tried ds on one nap today and he seems fine. still sleeping atm

We have move to one longer nap in the afternoon in general (she is ill at the moment and sleeping more)

Hi Cruisemum, I remember you from desperate sleep threads months and months ago. My DD is 15 months now and only has one nap which is at about 12.30 (and lasts between 40 and 90 mins). She does not need much daytime sleep though so sometimes she has no naps and shows no ill effect .

cruisemum1 · 26/11/2007 15:05

hi artichoke . I remember you (your name is slightly different though iirc). It ws you who got me through the cc trauma! (haven't looked back since...). He is sitll asleep after 2hrs15mins ! I have to wake him now for school run but I think i will stick with it. ttfn

Hi,

DS is 15 months and he goes to bed between 6-7pm, depending on how well he sleeps in the day and what time he gets up. If he wakes up at 7am, he has lunch at 11.45ish and goes down for a nap around midday. He can sleep for anything from 1 and a half to two and a half hours. If it's less than 1 and a half he goes to sleep at 6pm, otherwise he goes half 6pm or 7pm.

He used to have 2 naps in the day but he dropped one at about 11 months. He usually needs about 14 and a half hours in 24, or thereabouts, so I just juggle things about a bit depending on what he does that day.

Sorry its a bit long winded but HTH!

cruisemum1 · 26/11/2007 18:13

bohemianbing - not long winded - very useful - thanks

Hi Cruise, Long time no see

Today DD had two naps, not ideal because the second was late but she gets up so unreasonably early that she's knackered come 10am.

Most of the time however she's having one nap ranging from 1/2 an hour to 2 hours depending on whether she's at home or nursery in bed or in the buggy.

I'd say drop to one if it suits your day putting him down about 11?, it might mean he's asleep over lunch time for a little while so you'll have to rearrange that but that might work. My DD can usually make it through to bed if she wakes from her nap sometime after 1pm.

cruisemum1 · 26/11/2007 20:50

hi ginger I asked after you on SIFTW a couple of days ago. I was hoping that you were getting blissful uninterrupted nights these days but I guess you are not as I saw your name there a day later . I did drop the morning nap today to see how it went. He slept for 2hrs 20mins!. I will try to stick with it for now though I am sure there will be days where thngs dont go quite so smoothly. the joys of motherhood eh? How is your lo doing? lots of love and sleepy hugs for you Ginger

We are in a similar situation. DD (13 months) gets really tired by 10 but takes ages to go to sleep and I can't be arsed with it so have taken to stretching her out till she can take no more I too use snacks and a drink to get her through.

She will then have a lovely 2 hour nap

HOWEVER, on the days when she's in nursery for just the morning she cant last until 1pm when i collect her so they get her to sleep at 10 for half an hour or so and i have to then try and get her to nap again at about 2 at home.

Hopefully in a couple of months she will manage staying awake until 1.

Seona1973 · 27/11/2007 10:29

my ds had 2 naps yesterday and will have today as well (he is asleep in the car just now - bad mummy!!). He has woken up earlier than usual in the last few days (6.20am this morning) and is ready for a sleep earlier too - it is worse if we are in the car cos then there is no way to keep him from falling asleep. I cant really put my ds to sleep at 11am as I have to be out the door by 11.15am to pick my dd up from nursery so its either sleep around 10am and then around 3pm or stay awake till after lunch (12.30ish)and just have one nap. I just have to go with the flow and if he falls asleep in the morning he can have a couple of naps and if he manages to stay awake he can have just 1.

Surr3ymummy · 27/11/2007 13:52

My ds - 15mths has just moved from 2 naps to one, and this tends to be what we now do:

7.15am wake up & breakfast
11.45am Lunch
12.15pm Sleep
14.30pm ish wake up
5.30pm Tea
6.30pm bath
7pm bed

He's going to bed a bit earlier than he was with 2 naps, so the bedtime may go back to 7.30pm as he gets used to it.

cruisemum1 · 27/11/2007 14:34

ds had a nap disaster today. missed morning nap - as planned but then fell asaleep in car (unavoidable journey) at 11am. totall screwed rest of day up for naps - dunno ewhat will happen now!!!

Cruisemum- I remember getting DD down to one nap a day at around 12/13 months. This was partly because on nursery days (afternoons only) she would sleep around 9.30am at home but then not nap at lunchtime at nursery so would be really grouchy when we collected her (or sometimes asleep at 5pm from exhaustion). So it made sense for her to move to one nap at lunchtime. Your DS will get used to not sleeping in the morning. But there will be times when he is tired and will fall asleep. We moved DDs nap later and later in the morning, by 15-30 mins every few days til it was around noon. Snacks/drinks when they have a dip in energy is something we did too.

gingerninja · 27/11/2007 19:20

Hey Cruise thanks for your kind thoughts, DD does still wake but it's not nearly as painful as before. These days we only have really disturbed nights if she's teething or unwell. Me and DH take it in turns to see to her so we get plenty of nights off so it is managable. Hope you and yours are still doing well

cruisemum1 · 27/11/2007 20:09

surrey - thanks for the breakdown - very useful .
