think back. when your dc dropped their daytime nap, did they do it *snap* just like that, or was it a gradual process, say dropping one day out of two at first?

ds1 (2.5yo) doesn't seem to need them at all

but 2 weeks ago he was sleeping 1.5 hrs every day

i hoodwinked him into napping today (was convinced he was shattered) by taking him out in the car, but now he's full of beans

maybe that's it, just like that he's done with naps?

Tutter..thats kind of how dd3 did it..unfortunately at 21 months...apart from when in the car...but that disturbs bedtime.

DD dropped almost overnight. DS was more gradual - he started having one every other day and then a couple of times a week.

I used to get him to lie on his bed for half an hour or an hour with story tapes even when he didn't have a nap - he needed to wind dwn time.

scorpio1 · 26/11/2007 11:42

both of mine just stopped, just like that. i tried making them but it was obvious they didn't need it anymore. ds1 stopped nearer 3, ds2 more like just after 2.

PrettyCandles · 26/11/2007 11:42

Gradual. At first dropping or not seeming to neefd every day, eventually dropping all naps. Ds1 took over a year to drop his pm nap completely, dd took about 4-6m.

I can't remember with ds, but dd at around 2.5 started to get "difficult" at nap time. took ages to fall asleep, wanted me to lie down with her (which I didn't mind doing, but at that time I was working at a long translation and needed to work during her nap times, instead of napping with her). I decided to give up then and she was fine. she kept having a nap at nursery though for another few months.

my dd gradually dropped them. some days she just would not sleep so i got her up again. i tried driving her round in the car for ages and she would sometimes go off then i found it disturbed her bedtime. she would kind of do the catchup nap every 3 or 4 days or so, but i soon gave up making her and just waiting it out until bedtime.

wait until he doesnt want to sleep in the day OR need to sleep until 930pm, then you'll be peeved.............

this is my panicky thread

Would like to say both children are now napping everyday again and are sleeping right now and it was soooooooooooo worth sticking to it! Turns out it was just a phase!

LoveMyGirls · 26/11/2007 14:00

sorry that was my other panicky thread i actually meant you to read this one...

dd is 18 months old and has recently been taking longer and longer to fall asleep. i put her in her cot after her lunch and up until recently she would fall asleep within about 5 minutes, usually chattering and lately singing her self off. now in the last 3 weeks she has taken up to 45 minutes (!!) to go to sleep. she will happily lie in her cot with her cuddly toys, chatting to them, then eventually she rolls over and falls asleep. but now and again she just doesn't sleep. i've now figured out she only needs or wants her nap every other day. and this nap is only for half an hour. she sleeps 13-14 hours at night. if she has no nap it can be even longer. yesterday no nap, then at night she slept from 6.30pm until 8.30 am.

pulapula · 26/11/2007 14:01

DD started to drop her nap around 2.3, but we pushed it back til 1pm and then she would generally nap every day. Now she is 2.11 she only naps every few days, often 2.30-4.30 but we still put her in her room every day around 1.15 and often she just chats to her toys. We need a rest too. She always goes to bed at 7.15 or 7.30, nap or no nap.

Ds1 is 2.5. He dropped his daytime sleep just a couple of weeks before ds2 was born, a week before his second birthday (great timing, huh? ). But then he started waking earlier in the morning, so needed it again. We've only dropped it again this last week - although he would still sleep during the day, it was becoming more of a fight to put him down, and he was not going to sleep straightaway at bedtime (plus objecting to go to bed at night). Last time we did it gradually - a sleep every other day, then once every three days, then dropped it); this time we just went cold turkey. He still gets really tired around this time so I let him veg in front of the tv (we do all our going out activities in the morning), and there was one day when I felt I should have put him down for a nap, but generally speaking it's been fairly painless. I just make sure I keep him quiet for the period when he did have a nap, and make sure he doesn't get too hungry (if he doesn't get a snack midafternoon then you can guarantee a meltdown just before tea! )

Does that help at all? (my ds2 is the same age as your ds2 as well )

Carnival · 26/11/2007 14:12

DD is having her nap now, she's 2.11, her daytime nap is my sanctuary, and she always takes a nap at home. On nursery days she doesn't take a nap, but she is in a nightmare strop by the time she gets home. I think we should be working to faze them out, but like you, don't really know how it goes.

So, sorry, no practical help, but in same boat.
