Moving up the cot in sleep

DS has just turned 1 and for a few months now he’s been moving up the cot in his sleep until he hits his head at the top. He’ll keep moving around for a while and usually ends up stuck sideways against the end of the cot. At this point he wakes up upset and we have to pick him up and resettle him back at the bottom of the cot. On the odd occasion he does manga he to do a 180 and move back down to the other end (and sleep through Smile)

We had hoped it was just a phase but it’s been going on for a while. It concerns me that he’s hitting his head every night and it also disturbs his sleep. I’m not sure what advice I’m looking for as I don’t think there is much we can do. However I wanted to check if anyone has any suggestions?

no suggestions its normal they can't be stopped from moving. My ds now 18 did this would really bash against sides he never hurt himself. He learnt to self settle. He was a lot better once in a bed and despite still moving around loads he only fell out once.

My DD used to do this, it drove us absolutely nuts. It was the reason we had to move her into a larger cotbed in her own room at just 4 months, as she was waking up every 45 minutes & we were getting almost no sleep.
In the cotbed she was somewhat better, it usually took a couple of hours for her to get to the top, so DH & I got into the habit of going in every time one of us woke for the loo or whatever, checking on her & moving her right down to end. One hand under the head, other hand the drag the sleep bag down. Make sure no arms trapped in the bars first. Usually we managed it without waking her, & we got a lot more sleep overall. Sleep bags were absolutely essential for this reason.

I think many/most babies to this - they are wriggly little soandsos! It does no harm and generally you can just ignore. Some babies like to sleep squished into a corner or against the side

Thank you all for responding, I suspected there was little we could do but it’s good to know we’re not alone and hopefully he’ll learn to sort himself out at some point. He’s been asleep for 2hrs tonight and we’ve already heard his head hit the top!

@LegoCaltrops we saw a big improvement in sleep when he moved into a cot bed from the next2me too. I’m tempted to try moving him before we go to bed. Annoyingly he sleeps on his tummy with his legs under him and his bum in the air so we’d have to find a different method.

@Betsyboo87 it still works if they’re lying on their front, you just need to be rather more careful about how you put your hand under their face to lift the head. DD had started rolling over to sleep on her front sometime before 1st birthday but was still pushing up to end of cotbed for a while after she turned 1. She used to sleep with her bum sticking up in the air too, really funny! Grin
