bonfire night

Am I the only one dreading bonfire night? So far my 5month old DS has managed to stay asleep in the evenings because I put a large fan in his room until 11pm each night to deaden the bangs but I know that tonight is likely to be MUCH worse. If he does wake going in to him always makes him worse but I would feel so cruel to just ignore him when he has been disturbed. What is everyone else planning?

Last year my dd (then 1) slept through it with little problems which amazed me at the time as we live right by a big park which had a huge display, we're also close to Tower Bridge in London and there were fireworks going on everywhere non-stop all evening. This year (2) she's much more sensitive to noise so we just decided to take her out to see some rather than keep her in and hope she sleeps through it. But I guess that's not really an option at 5 months ...

Pebs I'm with Prefernot on this one. For the last 2 years dd has slept through with no problems. They are pretty sound asleep at that time of the evening so fingers crossed you'll be fine. Ours is 2.5 now so am slightly more concerned!
hello prefernot - good to see you out and about on mn x

dreading it here, ther were loads near us last year, before ds was born. if he wakes, is it best to get him up, or try and get him back off to sleep??

DaddyCool · 05/11/2004 12:50

My ds sleeps through the big fireworks that sound like World War 3 without a peep but if you stand on a creaky floorboard, he's up like a flash!

Hi Welshmum! Yes, I'm at 'work' so that means I'm on mumsnet ... Naughty mummy

I was thinking how strange it is that the sound of fireworks doesn't seem to bother dd but a slight banging from someone in the flat upstairs sees her in paroxysms of terror ...

DT1 was just woken by humungous bang. DT2 still sleeping. If I could find the person who lit it I would fire an even larger one right up his a*

MarsLady · 05/11/2004 20:31

And now DT2 is awake. Am gonna send that guy into space with the size of rocket that I am going to use.

pebs - my dd also seems to sleep through it all, but she likes bangs so she probably finds it soothing!

We went to the fireworks and dd was quietly interested but frankly not impressed. I agree melsy, I think they're crass things that just ruin the ozone, we went because we thought it would be more enjoyable than trying to get her to sleep through the noise (we're close to the Thames so basically have non-stop major displays all evening). As it was the bangs went on until well past midnight but she was so tired after a late bedtime that she more or less slept through it, though she woke at midnight and I put the fan on in her room to slightly drown out the suddenness of the bangs.
