Safe to start swaddling at 3 weeks?

DS2 is 3 weeks old today. We swaddled him for the first time last night and he slept in his bedside cot for 3 hours for the first time, until now he has been sleeping on us (I tried cosleeping but it made me very anxious).

Is it safe to start swaddling at this age? I read it can be bad to start it late but it didn't really specify what counted as 'late'. I do have severe anxiety so may be overthinking this (DH certainly thinks so) but just want to make sure we do things as safely as possible.

Should add we've been using a light Grosnug and just put his arms in it for the first time last night. He only wears a short sleeved vest underneath as our room is fairly warm.

Many parents try a few different sleepwear options over the first couple of weeks before finding what works best so I don’t see the harm in starting at 3 weeks. Swaddling can be dangerous once they can roll which is why it’s generally recommended that you stop once they reach 8 weeks old

Safe and very common to swaddle right from newborn. Most hospitals swaddle babies tight from being born, there is no "too early" age.

Safe Sleep Guidance says

  • don't swaddle above shoulders (so not wrapped around neck)
  • allow free movement of hips
  • Start using before 3 months (as in, don't start using swaddles for first time at 4 months)
  • Stop swaddling once baby is rolling. Which I'd say would be 4-5 months old.
