4 month old thrashing legs up and down

Our 4 month old has been a fairly decent sleeper. Over the last couple of weeks he's been a bit more restless at night but we put it down to teething and the 4 month regression.

Yesterday and today he has slept OK during the day but at night he just won't settle in his bed. We give him his bottle and he goes off to sleep as normal. But when we put him in his bed he just scrunches his legs and kicks them. As soon as you pick him up he's asleep again. Back in the bed and the same thing happens. He managed 40 mins tonight but he's now back to the leg kicking.

We thought yesterday it might be constipation but after a few dirty nappies today that's unlikely.

Any ideas why he does it and what we can do to help him settle? Don't really want him to sleep on us as we end up getting little to no sleep!

This isn't unusual, lots of babies do the same.

A tightly tucking in sheet over his legs may help keep them still. Or keep the swaddle if you've been swaddling as a newborn. Otherwise, use your hand to still his legs. Place your hand firmly over his thighs and hold his legs still and calm until he gets into a deep sleep (he will be doing this when in the light sleep phase).

If he's getting agitated, a dummy will problem help to allow him to comfort suck while in the cot and calming down.

My 4 month old does this too, his dummy usually settles him

My four month old is doing the same-it's apparently a sign that they're starting to develop rolling skills. She's definitely started moving about more when awake since it's happened.
