ds isn't sleeping well at the moment, and wakes up at night, but is teething quite badly. somedays he will have 1hr am and 1.5hrs after lunch, and a cat nap at 5pm for half an hour. he usually sleeps from 7.30pm till 6 ish, and sometimes goes back down for half an hour or so after his bottle at 6.30am. today he woke at 6.30 and would only have 30 minutes at 9.30am, and now has only had another half hour from 1pm till 1.30 pm. what else can i try for teething during the day, already doing calpol, nurofen, powders anbesol etc!! teething aside , do most people find that this age it is better to have two decent naps, or a short morning nap , and longer after lunch? also, when he misses his catnap at 4.30/5pm ish he is very tired at bedtime. would dropping this help him sleep better at night? HELP!!

alibo are u sure ur ds and my dd aint related!!?? dd is 9 mth and exactly the same, teething very badly with her top teeth and is being a nightmare with her sleeping. i have no advice im afraid i am just riding the storm hoping it will get better!!! she slept better as a newborn to what she is now!! give me a newborn anyday!!!

she generally wakes at 6am goes down at 9ish for 1hr, then has a nap around 3ish for 1hr goes to bed at bout 8pm.is your ds crawling? as i found since dd has been crawling she is more tired than usual.
i just try and tire her out really, plenty of play seems to do the trick. i personally wont let dd sleep after 4pm so i suggest dropping that catnap at 5pm. xxxxx

Hi mine seems to be doing the same at the mo too, and dd is 12mths (a whole year yikes!) usually sleeps happily 7.30 thru to 6-7am, currently waking a least once during the night..was 4am last night....although went down until 07:30 again, but the day before, nightmare, up at 04:30am and stayed up until afternoon nap (sleepwalking mummy)....think must be teeth, sorry can't provide any help, have also tried all the drugs going..... If its any use I think some babies start to drop the morning nap around this time in favour of just the one in the afternoon (so that's why all the playschemes are in the morning!)

blinkin teething-never imagined it could be such a nightmare!! he's been really upset by it today, 3 lots of half an hour since 6.30 this morning! his first two have been on their way through since he was 7 months, and number two is still not properly out! sure he must be getting a few all at once.
as far as naps, he's not reday to drop one in am, as even when he has 45mins to an hour in the morning, he is often very tired through his lunch. though if hae has a decnt nap after lunch i might start getting him used to not having a late afternoon catnap. see if it makes a diference to waking at night or early am.
Have always tried to encourage him to have decent naps in day, as so many people seem to say, if they're not overtired they sleep better at night.
just hope tomorrow is better!!

just bumping this, to find what naps work best at this age; short am, then longer after lunch, or longer am, then shorter in afternoon??

mine slept from 9-11 am, 1-3 pm, 6.30pm-6.30 am at about that age. I found with mine if they didn't sleep enough during the day they didn't sleep well at night. We used calgel and calpol for teething.

hia- dd 9 months and doesn't seem to sleep much. (also teething but this is pretty much the sleep routine)(sometimes she's up more in the night if her teeth and eczema are bad)
she goes to bed about 8.30 -asleep for 9.
wakes at 11 for a feed
wakes about 3 for a feed
wakes about 7.30 for the day.
half hour nap in the morning
an hour in the afternoon
she may or may not have a tea time nap
She's happy and full of life and the hv has agreed with me that this is fine as it's obviously all that she needs

in answer to the question - not as much as me clearly lol

elliott · 08/11/2004 10:17

to answer your question - ds1 used to have two longish naps at that age, usually longer in the morning. I would never wake him from a nap unless absolutely necessary, because he was a difficult sleeper who found it hard to nap.
ds2 (now 11 months) is more flexible, and often I wake him after a short am nap so that we can get out in the morning with ds1. It doesn't necessarily mean that his pm nap is longer though.
So to answer your question, it may not matter much if your ds is not a problem sleeper, but if I had a choice (i.e. only one child to organise my day around!) then I would just let them determine the length of the am nap - I wouldn't wake them.

Hiya- ds is also 9 mo and teething!

we wake at about 6.30 he then doses and feeds till about 8.30- then have breaky!

He has no morning nap as I find that if he does he then naps too late in the pm and won't go to bed at 7pm.

Lunch11.45-12ish

Nap 12.30-2.30 (would sleep all afternoon but again he won't go down at night if he does.)

then tea at 5
bath at 6
story etc 6.30
bed 7

I have found that giving nelsons teething powders at about 6.30pm calms him down a lot and means he sleeps better..I also use these if he wakes during the night and again they seem to help. He also seems to night wake more if he is not eating well (arggh teething!) gicing him banana funnily seems to help if he has not eaten alot.
