15 week old suddenly waking lots in the night - why?

My 15 week old was sleeping really well from about 8 weeks, doing 7pm until 4am, then a quick feed and back down till around 6ish. He's just getting over bronchiolitis, but over the last week has started waking numerous times a night, starting at about 1030ish. If I feed him and put him back down, he settles for about 5 mins, then starts whimpering, and can whimper on and off for a good hour or so, even if I go into him. Then when he wakes at around 4ish, that's it for the night, there's no getting him back off to sleep. He's breastfed but for one bottle a day, and I'm wondering if maybe he's hungry and I should up the bottles? Or is he just waking as a result of the bronchiolitis? Any ideas anyone?

Hi Ellieo
I'm sorry to hear that you're having problems with your baby. However, unfortunately what you describe is quite normal.
Most babies go through phases of sleeping better and waking more.
It's possible that your DS's waking is due to the bronchiolitis, but it's also possible that he's hungry.
If he's going through a growth spurt, he may want to feed more. However, if that is the case, you probably don't need to add any more bottles, he'll get as much as he needs from your breast milk.
One other possilibility is that he is teething. Although you probably won't see any teeth coming through for a few more weeks yet, they could be moving growing inside his gums and causing him pain.
Whatever the cause, please be reassured that it's probably only a phase and that he will sleep better again soon.
Good luck!

Sounds like he may need more breast feeding. He could also be unsettled due to being ill.

Bump for someone to see who knows more.

Good luck.

Thanks guys, I'm hoping it will pass and he'll go back to sleepign well. DS1 was a complete nightmare and didn't sleep through until he was nearly 2 so I'm just dreading the same thing happening again!

could be a growth spurt? it always used to freak me out when that happened but then things returned to normal after a few days.. all the best!

is he cold? Might be worth keeping the room a bit warmer or putting an extra layer on him.....

When my DD was unsettled during the night only putting her in bed next to me seemed to get her off again properly. Then I started putting an extra layer on her at night and it turned out she had only wanted me for my body heat

Do you know, I was about to post exactly the same thing about 14wk old dd when I saw this thread - she's been up every hour or so for the last few nights and I'm wiped out.

(and she's not hot, cold or even especially hungry - sucks idly for 2min then drops off )

The rest of my antenatal posse with similar age babies (whether bf, ff or mixed) are also finding they're having a bad patch so we're all praying it's Just A Phase.

Maybe they're revving up our supply for the famed 4m growth spurt?

yep - no answers i'm afraid but i can sympathise - my DD2 (15 wks) has started waking after 3-4 hours when previously she's done 8 hour stretches, she's also started shouting in her sleep (sounds like tarzan). not too hot/cold/particularly hungry so i look forward to any helpful answers you may get....

also got another DD who is 2.10 and never slept through till she was moved to a big bed so dreading having that again
